30 SECOND REVIEW OF FADE TO BLACK:
Picked up a copy of Fade to Black today ... decent game, but not all that.
Can't control it for one. Too many commands for an action game. Runs
decently, but not under Win '95. Load time for saving and loading is
atrocious. Interesting concept, nice engine, but gameplay sucks big time.
Mouse control is nice, but firing (once you get into "combat mode," after
you've been shot 30 times) doesn't work. I only get about one out of 4 shots
off. The death video sequences are annoying, you have to wait too long to die
and get back into the game. Steep learning curve. Bottom line: Save your
receit.

Bottom line: Save your : receit. Y'know, it amazes me. When Doom 2 came out everyone was upset about the fact that they didn't let you look up or down, jump, and so on. However, adding all of this means you HAVE to add more controls. Fade To Black gives you a LOT of control over the character. You can look around corners, shoot, throw a grenade, etc. You are also in a pure 3D world. Now, I'll admit that F2B is not perfect and there are some things I would like changed. However, too many commands is not one of them since it's nice to have as much control over your character as possible. Were I to ask for something it would be to lock into a perspective where you're look from behind the characters head. The constantly changing views were what made the game difficult for me to play. Something else I'll point out is that the original Flashback was not purely an action game. It was a game where you couldn't just go in with guns blazing, clear a path and win the game. You had to think about what you were doing and you had to think about the best way to engage a fight before getting into the fight. The same thing held true for Out of this World. I, personally, look forward to this game. However, I would definatly NOT recommend it to anyone that is looking for a pure action game since that is not what it's intended for.

I'll add that I'm running it on a 120 MHz Pentium. Is it possible your settings are too high given your hardware, e.g. high res on a 486? I run it in high resolution mode and can't complain. No atrocious load and save times. I have no problems firing, in fact I can fire much faster than the demo that was out on the net. "Death scenes" are basically instantaneous for me. Steep learning curve, well, that's debateable. I played the demo before I bought the game. I can only praise Delphine for coming out with an innovative 3-D game in this time of "me too" DOOM clones.

However, what made OOTW and Flashback so popular was that it was basically a 2 dimension platform game with problem solving twists and lots of neat cutscenes, along with great action. The move to 3-D was obviously the next step but it just doesn't have the same feel or thrill that OOTW and Flashback gave me when I first played it on my Amiga. --------------------------------------------------------- David Kwan | e-mail: s81...@aix2.uottawa.ca University of Ottawa | dk...@emr1.emr.ca B.Sc - Computer Science | http://aix2.uottawa.ca/~s811580 ---------------------------------------------------------

While I disliked OOTW on my Amiga, I am happy to say Fade To Black is just completely great. I haven't actually fealt I was in such a cool game forever, the true 3D works great on my DX4-100 even in High res (tho, i do make the view area smaller - worth it.). I keep feeling like i'm playing a really cool TV show and in full control. The music and sfx are GREAT on my GUS Max, and the animations i've seen so far are pretty cool as well! I'm glad I bought it so far.

I really like FTB, but I too miss the old side view. Flashback and Prince of Persia were some of my favorite game. Oh well, I hope those games are not gone forever.

As long as companies continue to create innovative (yet made on the model of games of old) games such as Abuse and Apogee's Realms of Chaos, both sidescrollers, the art of the adventure side-scroller (NOT including mario platforms) will never die. Anyone here think that Abuse = Metroid + Contra?
