Well, I just finished the beta version (though I doubt I saw it all,
will play again.)

This EASILY beats any other scrolling 2-d shooter out there (i.e. any
apogee 2D game, Jazz, etc.). Why?

1) Not cute. I hated these platform games before because they were
just too cute.
2) Easiest interface (once you get used to it, about 1 minute or so)
I've seen since DOOM.
3) The playability... wow. I was upset when I finished, I wanted more.
Most shareware games I don't feel that.
4) The adaptability... you can make almost anything with this engine.
5) Weapon choices, and each one is noticably different.
6) I kinda like having no music. Maybe this is a new trend (as quake
is also not to have music.)

My only gripes:

1) not enough enemies (types, not sheer numbers..) Hopefully there
will be more in the registered version.
2) A tad slow in hi-res but worth it since you see so much more. Also
Univesa should be included in the package since most cards apparently
need this (or a variant of it) to get the higher resolutions.
3) Occasionally (it happened twice), my shots would start firing
from a place ABOVE my character, kinda weird, but once I moved to a
new section, this would stop happening.
4) I hope the final registered version will have a menu choice to choose
which mode you want to play in as a default.

Comparisons to other 2D scroller shoot-em-ups:
1) All apogee games in this genre: not even close. Duke Nukem comes
closest, though.
2) Blackthorne: terrible interface destroys any sort of
playability.
3) Jazz Jackrabbit: the best one until Abuse. Main problem was lack
of any sort of strategy, at least in the shareware version.

Summary:

This is easily the best game in the action category since DOOM.
No game since DOOM has made me want more.

The previous poster really liked this game (obvious from
the subject), but the demo left me wanting more.

The poster was right in every respect. This is the best 2D
scroller on the market. The character had a very large
number of poses, making his (its?) motions very fluid and
lifelike, especially when panning the weapon around in a
circle, WOW! I really did like that.

Yet . . . it is just another 2D scroller, and I expected
more. More of what? I can't say, but it just didn't thrill
me. I really liked this game, but won't buy it, and won't
recommend it. It doesn't offer anything really new or
innovative (IMHO).

I really liked breakthrough hits like:

Dune2 -- realtime strategy combat that made the minute-hand
on your clock spin like a weed-eater cord, with extra
attention paid to the details (sounds, animations,
interface)

Xwing -- fantastic flight engine coupled with a blockbuster
movie world, I almost got divorced over this one.

Mechwarrior 2 -- great graphics (if you have the processor
for it) and (again) great interface.

Abuse doesn't fit here. It is good, fun, etc., but seems
more applicable to a SNES or SEGA as far as platforms go.
If you like the 2D-scroller type games (Prince of Persia,
Blackthorne, etc.,) GO FOR IT. But if you just like games
in general, I advise to wait. This game doesn't offer
enough to justify the cash.

For what it's worth,

Mike

Ummm, ok, how bout deathmatch mode? Not new or inovative in of itself
but has never been done before in a 2d scroller, for any market, the
networkabiltiy of the pc offers this, cause you can have characters be
at diff places af the map at the same time, arcade home system could
play teams but had to stay on same playfield.

Also a built in, easy ( comparitively) to use level editor.... Im allready working on
a level....

Granted dont get this if you dont like platformers at all, but to call
MW2 inovative I dont quite see...personally MW2 leaves me cold do to
the fact that its not freform like MW1 that was the big appeal, I had
a reason to aim for the legs, it increased salvage rates, that was
important, doesnt seem to be any real reason to aim for legs other
than they may blow easier than other locals..... And whats with the
not affecting storyline, not only linear missions, but it doesnt
matter what you do?

Deathmatch mode?? I got abuse33.zip from ftp.cdrom.com and it had
nothing about deathmatch in the game!! Do you have a different version.
If so, where do I get it??

There is none.. yet. Multiplayer capability is one of the main features
to be added to the engine. The code was left out because there was not enough
time to finish and test the code before release. The TCP/IP code is done
I believe but the author (Jonathan Clark) told me that the IPX code is being
rewritten from scratch because it is too slow at the moment. The network
patch will support IPX, TCP/IP (Beam & Whiteside) and modem play.

Since it sounds like you haven't read the original advertisement for the
game (which you can see by fingering he...@crack.com) I'll summarize the
features.

1) Client/Server framework
2) Supports as many players as the server can handle. Obviously this is
a theoretical limit since the engine itself will _not_ utilize more than
5 megabytes of memory but it should be able to support more than eight
players depending on the speed of the server.
3) Players can come and go as they like without disrupting the game
4) Supports IPX, Beam & Whiteside TCP/IP and modem play
5) Client logs on to server and is sent any source code, graphics and
sounds which it doesn't have after which the client enters the game.

What this means is simple... any game you design with the Abuse game engine
-- and I mean the engine, not the just the Abuse level editor -- has the
potential to be a multi-platform (DOS, SGI, Linux, Mac) multiplayer networked
game. Not too shabby eh?

Not only this but the use of external code to process all of the objects in
the game means that you will see countless varieties of multiplayer Abuse.
The author of Abuse intends to make public at least one or two team-sport
variants of multiplayer abuse.

And as Forrest Gump puts it so well, thats all I have to say about that.

Will net/modem play be available in an updated shareware version?
I'd love to play it with my friends, but I don't think they'd be
willing to shell out $45 each for the game.

The network patch _will_ work with the shareware version.
