BOYCOTT SIERRA !!!

Sierra always seems to come back and say that there are many many people who
enjoy playing their games and only a handful seem to complain. Well, in case
you haven't noticed yet, 90% of this news group is filled with complaints from
Sierra customers. SOme are still complaining about Outpost, but most are
complaining about the lack of challenge and quality of current Sierra games.
Phant. is a nice movie to watch, but the gameplay was practically made to
entice NEW GAMERS and not challenge long time adventure players.THe interface
s too simplistic as well as the gameplay. Point, click, watch, point, click,
watch, insert next disk, point, click, watch, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, take back, get
refund, wait for next overrated and delayed flop. This has to stop and it's
the consumers that are going to have to stop it. These companies pump up their
games before release so you will buy them. How many of you bought DM2 only to
find it was a flop from Interplay? They pumped that thing up for months,
especially on their WWW site. What about Lords Of Midnight...it might as well
been Lord Of THe FLies because that's what it attracted. Sierra used to be a
good company and somewhere down the road they got lost....or someone in upper
management did. It's our responsibility to help them find their way back or
get out of the business. Their games just aren't worth buying anymore and it's
depressing. I say BOYCOTT Sierra and some of these other companies producing
flops by not buying their next series of games!!! Demand your money's worth
and not some $60 movie that you could see at a theatre for $6.You know what I
mean. One final thing, the main actress in Phant. needs some more acting
lessons in certain parts of the game. Look for this title to get #1 in
Sierra's InterAction Magazine. That's marketing for ya. zzzzzzzzzz

How about this instead. If a game is good buy it. If a game sucks,
don't buy it. Then game companies will have to try to make good games
to make money.

Funny how that works.

Point of Order, my Ultima II disk for the Atari 800 all say
Sierra On Line on them. The split did not occur until Ulitma III.

BTW: John Harris is still around, like wise Chuckles who did the
Apple/Atari ports for the Ultima.

Why boycott Sierra? I think it'd send a much clearer message
if you bought the game and sent it back if you don't like it.
After all, if a game's not selling well it could always mean that
the marketing and presentation just aren't catching people's
interest. If you return the game, it tells them that the product
interested you, but you demand better quality.

Too bad other game companies don't have this policy, I've
spent a good amount of money on games that weren't worth
the box they came in. All I can do with them (the ones not
from Sierra, at least) is try to dump them off on my friends and
bitch and whine about how much I was ripped off.

I usually wait until these things come out on oem. ;^)
Then since the game is 20-25 bucks it seems
like a much better deal.

CRAP DELETED!!!!

You know, I've heard more people bitch about how bad software companies
are and how we should boycott this and boycott that and how they need
to put out better products. I'm getting quite sick of it!

There is a very simple way to keep from wasting money on games that you
don't like or ones that were different from what you thought. Do what
I do: watch the newsgroups read what people say about the games and
then decide from the praises or complaints if you want to buy it. I've
done this with several games: NBA Live (when people started saying it
was too easy, I decided I'd skip it), Tony Larussa 3 (first thing
people complained about was the slow gameplay on normal machines, ie
486DX2-66. I even went a step further and went to Egghead to try it
out. The complaints were warranted!), FPS Baseball '95 (many hours to
simulate a weeks worth of games is ridiculous!), MechWarrior2 (this
one was so hyped up, there was no way I was going to buy it the first
day. Sure enough, people are complaining about the need for patches).

The list goes on and on! There are enough people out there who buy
games when they are released and are nice enough to post reviews on the
games to make an intelligent decision on whether others should buy.
Another way to test the games is to go to a place that lets you try
them out first (Egghead does in my area) and play around with it for a
while. Check the playability. Check the utilities. Shit, check
everything humanly possible. We're talking about $50+ here! That's
quite an investment when you purchase several games a year!

So, quit your bitching about boycotting companies for crappy products.
There will always be games out there that are hyped up by them that you
don't like and that aren't up to your expectations. Instead of getting
mad about it, check the games out first and then make an INTELLIGENT
decision on whether the game is good for you!

Absolutely agree. There are now tons of ways of trying before buying. There are
magazines, eg. PC Gamer and even CGW, that have demos on CD. Try them out first.
Many companies have demos that you can ftp (not just screens shots, but playable
demos). You can now rent from video stores. Here in Toronto, Jumbo Video rents
IBM PC CD-ROMs such as Mechwarrior II, Full Throttle, etc. Many stores have playing
demos that you can try before buying. I have found these things to be absolutely
invaluable. I've stayed away from real stinkers this way and found some real gems
that don't get advertised too much. Oh, also check out usenet groups, usually you'll
get a review or two, although some people may get over-zealous but still quite
informative.

First of all, this just shows how wrong your theory is. MW2 is a great game.
NBA LIVE 95 is a great basketball game for the PC. As for the others, they
might stink, but according to a majority of the newsgroups & what you stated
above, only 50% of your little "follow the newsgroups" theory is correct. As
a result, you're missing out on 2 good games. All I've seen about
Phantasmagoria is that it is too simplistic and more movie that gameplay.Had
I not already traded OUtpost in for it last year, I wouldn't have bought the
damn thing. Sierra shipped it to me & I will more than likely ship it back.
I'm using the newsgroup to let them & others know why.If you don't like it,
then you can hit your little SKIP button.

: The list goes on and on! There are enough people out there who buy
: games when they are released and are nice enough to post reviews on the
: games to make an intelligent decision on whether others should buy.

How do you know that I'm not one of these people? In other words, anyone
buying this game and playing it could make the same assessment that I have.
Yet, you're sick and tired of what negative things people have to say. Do
you think I should scan the newsgroups until I find one good review and then
run out and buy the game? That's what your practically saying in your second
paragraph. I have just as much right to post why I dislike the game and the
quality of games from ANY company just as much as the reviewers do.

: Another way to test the games is to go to a place that lets you try

Yeah....I'll run right out to my local library or Blockbuster video & try it
out. Not everyone has an Egghead in their backyard dude.

Quit my bitching? If more people bitched, complained, and boycotted then it
would seriously get the attention of these companies. Out of all the 1995
releases, I bet you couldn't name more than a few games that were actually
decent releases this year. Heck....using your little method, you've probably
missed half of the good releases. So, until these "well respected" companies
live upto their original standards and the standards the consumers request of
them, I'll keep assessing and expressing my satisfaction and dissatisfaction
toward them whether you like it or not.I suggest others do the same and maybe
someday these companies will listen instead of letting it go in one ear & out
the other.

That's what I do (even though I got Full Throttle when it came out based on
the demo I played - but I was lucky in that the shop accepted it back the next
day when I completed it...) but there is a problem in as much as if we all did
this then nobody would be out there buying these games to grip/rave about.. :)

Excellent advice.

Anyway, if we look at Sierra games I will admit that their "polishedness" is
increasing while the lastability has plumetted. Mind you, they still do produce
gems and for this they should be applauded.

I really enjoyed the Police Quest series, Gabriel Knight (despite the bugs),
LSL and the earlier Kings Quest games.

I think they got lost when they let Lory and Corey Cole move to

won't be the same!

This has been the only intelligent reply that I have seen to date.

It was also right on with what I was attempting to say in a round-about
way.

Put more simply, if you don't like a game, don't buy it. The only way
to know if you'll like it is to try it first, or read the reviews in
the newsgroups. Rather than complain about boycotting a company
because you don't like the game, other avenues should be explored first
to find out if the game is one you'd like.

For Finality: GOOD LUCK ON YOUR BOYCOTT!!!!

My system works for me. I haven't "missed" any good releases. I've
bought the games that I like and haven't bought any that I wouldn't. I
will certainly be buying Front Page Sports Football Pro '96 when it's
released because it's the BEST football sim on the market. Geez, it's
even made by Sierra. Surprise, Surprise...

Remember when we were all inexperienced gamers? (at one point in time,
anyway) We all played Sierra games, and thought the were the greatest
think since cheese in a can.
Well sir, after a few years of trying out other types of games from other
producers, etc., we have come to see that there is great depth within the
industry, and that our own sophistication, and demands have grown.
This vast market of newbie gamers will (hopefully) follow this same path
of metamorphosis, and come to the conclusion that while there are some
truly great products out there, there is more virtual crap than you can
shake a stick at.
So, in that these new gamers may be the source of this new 'mass-market'
strategy, they will also be the downfall of it. They just needs
educatin', and that comes through experience, as well as the gentle
guiding hand of those of us with more gaming hours under our belt than we
would care to admit.

IMHO,

I'd like to second that. Any shop that'll allow you to check out a
game before buying it is a rarity now, because they get abused by kids who
use them as arcades. Any shop that'll allow you to check out a PC game
that has to be installed is a gem.
Unfortunately, demos aren't always ideal. Once or twice I've had to
cross my fingers when buying a game I've seen a demo of, saying "I hope
it's a bit more varied than the demo.."

It doesn't work. How many more Sierra games do I have to take back before they
finally get it right? Buying and then returning is not the issue. The issue
is whether Sierra can create a "keeper" or not. Look at how many people kept
OUTPOST (the game wasn't finished upon released) in order to get the patch.
They fooled the public into not returning it (well, almost) and reported sales
as being high. Oh Please. THat game was crap. Look at SQ6. The announcer in
that game is so annoying that it makes people NOT want to finish the game.
SOmebody DEFINITELY had their head in their rear end by letting that get out
the door. Anyone else want to add to the onslaught of errors Sierra has made
in the last 2-3 years? My fingers would cramp before I could type it all.
Anyone have any comments regarding INN? That should be a hoot.

Actually, if I buy it and then take it back isn't that the same as not buying
it at all? If so, all Sierra has done is given me a crappy game to play and
then return when I'm finished(especially if it's short) for a complete refund
if I keep the receipt. That's how you try before you buy in my area. Not all
of us are blessed with Eggheads and rental places. That's for those who can't
afford to buy the game at the moment. My point is that I haven't seen too many
games lately from Sierra that are worth keeping. How can they be making money
from that?

Too easy.

: It was also right on with what I was attempting to say in a round-about
: way.

: Put more simply, if you don't like a game, don't buy it. The only way
: to know if you'll like it is to try it first, or read the reviews in
: the newsgroups. Rather than complain about boycotting a company
: because you don't like the game, other avenues should be explored first
: to find out if the game is one you'd like.

Again, this would be a good avenue if 1. I couldn't afford the game, 2. I
had someplace close in my area to check out these games 3. I had 2-3 hours
to check out these games in the store since you can't tell much from playing
them for 10 minutes, and 4. If I wasn't reviewing the game for others.

I'm sure all these reviewers on here wait 2-3 weeks before a game comes out.
I don't think so. I buy early because I can and because I want to if I think
it's supposed to be a good game or if it was really hyped up. If I don't like
them, I take them back. My problem is that too many games these days are NOT
worth keeping and I'm not the only one to announce that over the Internet.
Something is wrong with some of these companies.

: For Finality: GOOD LUCK ON YOUR BOYCOTT!!!!

Good luck on finding a decent game that's worth the money.

No, I said Sierra..not Dynamix. Everyone who's anyone knows that FPSF was
created by Dynamix before the greedy name change. What you find FUN is a
Dynamix game. Dynamix is excellent and is probably the "kickstand" that;s
holding Sierra up. In fact, I know it is.

Personally,I liked Conquests Of Camelot and Robin Hood. However, all the good
game designers usually wind up leaving Sierra for some reason. Josh Mandel had
to take a break last year because people at Sierra were getting on his nerves.
I'm surprised Al Lowe and Jane Jenson are still there.

The later ones (KQ4 to before KQ5) I think had a better interface -
pausing the game for you to type. However Gold Rush was a great game.

Cheers!
