Howdy,

Can anyone provide some hints on how to finish this mission: You're
assigned to ambush and "take the place of" an enemy mech, then go in and
destroy the terraformer core. --Once I get into the main compound, I
find I've got 3 mechs on top of me, none of whom are fooled by the stolen
IFF code....

Thanks,

The idea is to destroy the Mech, then take its place, after which go to the
Nav point which they will check u out for the IFF code which should check out
..then look for the core....turn on the image enhancement and the area in the
hardened building which is blue colour is the area u wanna shoot...after
that....its good luck cos all the mechs and the turrets will start to pounce
on u....my strategy is to get to some safe distance away from the turrets and
take care of the mechs first always continuing to move not too far away from
the mech...after that take out the turrets when u have finished with the
mechs....thats all folks

The only suggestion that I can give, is run like mad. There is a vent
that you have to use to destroy the objective. If you run fast enough,
you can get away from the enemy mechs before you get killed. Then, when
you blow up the core, most of the mechs will leave you alone, but you
better move fast to get out of range of the exposion (I didn't make it the
first time, and was killed by the blast. It was an interesting death.)

My problem, when I first played this mission, was that after I destroyed the
core, the Stormcrow would catch me just as I was making my getaway. My
choices were, run and get destroyed by the Stormcrow, or turn and fight the
Stormcrow and have all of the other 'Mechs catch up.

My solution: try to force all of the enemy 'Mechs to a one-on-one fight
before I took out the core.

My suggestion is to use the Nova. It's very fast and delivers a well enough punch to
kill the Rifleman and Nova who is waiting for you. After you destroyed the core just
start running at full speed (towards your dropship) and you will clear the blast.

Cheers

Hey,

My soloution to this one (after one or two tries) was to customize a 'mech
for the job. I think I did something like a 60 or 55 ton 'mech with either
a 5 or 6 walk speed (I still think in terms of the board game -- that is, the
speed of the mech is five or six clicks on faster from 0). Then I added 2
LRM15s, and Med. Pulses. To win, Make it by the encampment of Falcons, using
the IFF code. Then, when you enter the actuall terraformer core, destroy the 2
or 3 mechs inside. No others will enter the compound to chase you. Wander
around to the south side of the core, blow open the vent, then blow up the core.
Next, run like hell. (the reason for using a _fast_ mech) Flee the explosion
or you will bite it too.

Good Luck,

Zog, Star Colonel, Clan Wolf

Well, you're a better pilot than I. I tried several times, but was never
able to kill all the Mechs.

Finally, I hopped in a Jenner, avoided the Mad Dog at the beginning,
avoided the base, zipped over to the terraformer, blew through the door
(all at top speed...)

Then I turned on the jump jets, zipped over at 400 kph to the vent, blew
it, went inside, got behind the core for cover, blew it, and then (again
at full jump jets) zipped out, back around the base, and through the door
and back to my dropship.

You can't use the jump jets to scale the walls, however. Gravity is
apparently too high.

John> Well, you're a better pilot than I. I tried several times, but was

The solution to this, like many other missions, is mech customization.
I gutted the given Mad Dog, stripped all heat sinks, and gave it jump jets,
9 machine guns with 400 rounds each and 1 Med ER Laser (ok, so I was
paranoid I'd run out of ammo). Oh, and I think I had enough tonnage left to
add more armor. Granted, this isn't a new or innovative design, but it
worked for me.

When engaging enemy mechs, use the jump jets to charge them (to get into
range) and open up in group fire mode. Most of them can't handle more than
5 seconds of sustained fire before exploding. I should mention that once
you get close enough to fire you might want to go into the standard run-
circles-around-enemy-with-90-degree-torso-twist-while-shooting tactic,
or your mission might end real quick. :)

So I went with this mech (dubbed Mike's Gunnin' 'Dog) through the standard
nav point suite, took out my Jade Falcon twin with ease, passed by the JF
base, waved at the Summoner at the gate to the terraformer, calmly walked
through the front door.

Once inside, I charged the Rifleman and opened up on him (he's the biggest
threat in the compound IMO). After he went down the Nova went quickly.

(Sometimes other JF mechs try to join the party. You should treat them like
you treated the rest, with lotsa lead. (-: )

As I headed round to the vent on my way to the core I blew away the exhaust
lines, because they would impede my movement when I wanted to escape.

The rest was easy. Blew the core with the med. laser and booked on out of
there with jump jets back to dustoff. Mission over.

Well, I read a solution to this mission here and tried it myself and it
worked great. Load up a Jenner with all the JumpJets it can carry and
then your favorite weapons. Take out the initial guy and then don't even
go to the base, head straight for the terraformer. At the south West
corner of the compound, there is a hill. I just launched off the hill
with jump jets pushing up and forward and flew right over the wall. The
mechs insided didn't care about me at all until I blew up the core and
then I was able to blow out of there through the gates and speedy back to
the ship. Kind of cheating, but it worked.

The Default Mad Dog will do just fine if you're a good shot at the legs.
Just inside the door is a Nova and Rifleman. As soon as you clear the
door, launch as many LRM's at it as possible (40?). It will blow up
almost immediately, or at least lose a leg. Then turn around and destroy
the Rifleman. The Summoner at the door usually do not come in, but tries
to head you off OUTSIDE. And if it follows up to the other side, you get
free shots at the terraformer core, and it won't catch up if you run for
the door.

The key to most of the missions is customizing properly. Your
fighting is all close range so use some med lasers and load up on the
machine guns. Also you need a fast 'mech to get away from the
explosion.

I have managed to pull this mission off on medium diff. with a
firemoth. You need to use machine guns only, more armour, and make
sure you put NOTHING in the mechs arms. keep all your guns in the
torso so that when the wimpy arms get peeled off you can still fight.

This is a great way to increase your score through the weight bonus.

P.S. Where are the targets of opportunity in the very first mission
for wolf clan? Anybody have a list of what all the target of opps.
are in the different missions?

Later.
