I've often wondered if their underpowered hardware is one of those "crazy like a fox" moves. One of the reasons so many early video games were great is because the extremely limited computing resources required the developer to get really creative on how to utilize such sparse resources -- that creativity is often what led to the game design choices that made the classics what they are. Maybe Nintendo wanted to frighten away the developers who would just end up doing a lackluster port of some Metal Gear Solid game or whatever. Who needs yet another platform to play games like that? What's great about Nintendo games is (as you said) the guarantee if it has their name on it, it's not going to be shovelware. If I were a third-party developer who didn't have a similar commitment to quality, I would run like hell too (and blame it on weak hardware if that's convenient).. lol
