Besides that backwards compatibility never really was an issue >for console manufacturers (Sony being the prime example). I would sharply disagree here. I use software called Cubase. The Windows version sometimes gets screwed slightly by an OS upgrade (as it did recently with Windows 10), introducing some minor breaking change that screws up the application, but it's a common occurance that Cubase gets fucked by subsequent OS X versions (and audio processing is one of Apples strongest communities for OS X). They have done similar things with Logic Pro and Final Cut at the application level that rendered projects created in previous versions completely obsolete, no upgrade path. And since one of the things I do as part of my career is write Objective C and Swift code using XCode, I can't tell you how many times they have broken shit. Even the Swift language itself is kind of an ongoing joke. Each minor update breaks something with existing Swift code -- it's an extremely poorly thought out language that they seem to be figuring out as they go along. >The cut on the Mac was severe when they switched from OS9 to OSX. >Sure they break a little bit from time to time, but overall the APIs on >OSX are pretty stable. We'll have to agree to disagree about the importance of backward compatibility. I don't know if you've ever written C# code, but it's infinitely better thought-out than Swift and ObjC. The language designers and developers at Apple are not even worthy of doing yardwork for some of the programming minds that are still at Microsoft.
