I once had a look at WinG.
WinG does a little bit of accelerating. WinG is a library which allows
you to access bitmaps directly in memory to program directly into
them. But the acceleration of WinG is done at the point when the
Bitmaps are copied from the WinG GDI to the SDK GDI or to another WinG
via bitblit so the faster your bitblit works on your graphics
accelerator the faster your WinG games are. In my opinion the main
problem about WinG is that it doesn't support the dedection of the
monitors redraw period so all the double buffering and redrawing
produces small disortions (every three to four seconds) in the window
because of a bad synchronisation between the refresh and the drawing.
WinG doesn't have routines for sprite programming, no collision
dedection ... which apparently is necessary for game programming. You
have to program everything on your own.

So much for WinG. Does anybody have some information on DirectDraw. I
really would appreciate to know a little bit more about it.
