Everything has been getting sleeted with spam lately. As for this place, I come to lurk once in a while to see what's going on. I guess most of the regulars left after the only potential continuation was cancelled, and the EDF project fell to peices. Yup, I keep this newsgroup subscribed because I'm a sentimental sod but I don't expect we are going to see an XCOM(like) succesor. Aftermath was a dissapointment and JA2 wildfire, while interesting, isn't really worth making fuss over. Oh well, someday maybe our luck will change. It's good to see that somebody is still around. Do you have any idea what happened to the guys from the EDF project? Whenever I posted here, they would say that lots of progress is being made, but on the website, I never saw any. Anyway, on an OT note, does anyone know where I can find the x-com collector's edition unofficial patch (for nvidia cards)? Yeah, that's the one, but I only remember the problem being with nVidia cards. You mean to tell me, that there were people with ati cards that had the same trouble too? Hmm. They never made any progress at all. They were a bunch of losers. Try

LSN in it's current form doesn't appeal to me and it's been so long ago that they said they had started working on AI then I'm beginning to wonder what the Hades is going on. Ohwell, it probably means it's going to kick arse when it's done. Meanwhile I plan to keep myself happy with Combat Mission: Afrika Korps. A scale up from squad based combat, but a whole lotta turn based combat fun. But I forgot to mention one game that might satisfy our squad based RPG-ish tastes. Silents Storm has a rather spiffy engine. I suggest anyone who hasn't done so already checks out the demo. The deformable terrain is a real joy, AI is pretty competent. My cool-o-meter redlines when machine-gunning a sound contact a floor above you only for the floor to give way and a corpse to flop down the hole, preferably getting stuck half way! The only real niggles are that AI turns take loooong and that map sizes are small as a result of wich throwing a grenade means you can't toss it very much past your own feet due to compressed ranges.

Until Koralt decided to disappear without a trace for a year, it looked like it was really getting off the ground. There just wasn't anyone who could take his place and drop off a 400 page design doc on them. I think their goals were bit ambitious, and that they should have just started off with an x-com clone first, but I really think it would have amounted to something if there had been someone to take Koralt's lead role before the people dissappeared. Well, that's my 2 cents anyhow. Thanks for the link btw, ADAMIZER

A design doc never ever counts as progress. It's mainly Koralt's fault
for it being such a mess because he didn't keep the project under
control and at a realistic scale.

A question I always asked myself. Should I recommend Combat Mission to X-Com players? The scale of the combat is one level up and there is no managment bit other that picking your forces for a quick battle but I always found the pace and basic idea of combat somewhat similar. So fess up, who else here plays combat mission? (or wants to do so after playing one of the demos at http://www.battlefront.com ) <hint, hint> I for one rate Combat Mission on a par with X-Com.

Yeah, I would reccomend it, with the simple caveat that *it's not squad level*. It operates at more of a battalion level, with the smallest units usually being squads or half squads, with the occaisional special purpose soldier like a sniper or somesuch. You dont have the same level of control as you do in xcom, and your guys very much have a mind of their own sometimes. That said, the game has some really nifty commands to control your units with, great graphics, and the armoured combat is to die for. It also helps if you're into WW2. I would also rate Combat Mission with X-Com. They're both the same kind of genre-breaking/defining type of game, even though they're really quite different. Believe it or not, I was first introduced to CM by Det, way back when we were still brainstorming ideas for Genesis. - Jason
