This is where the time dilation effect comes in. Simply put velocity (V) = change in distance (delta d) diveded by time taken(delta t) If the sum of two velocities is greater than the speed of light then a limit is hit due this impossibility. The equation no longer balances i.e. v != delta d / delta t The change in distance is known and therefore the time taken must vary in order to balance the equation. That is why two objects travelling at great relative (to each other) speeds seem to experience different 'times'.
