LCD's suck

I reinstalled UT99 the other day. Downloaded Chris Dohnal's OGL renderer,
turned on vsync and tried her out for a bit. The last time I tried
installing UT99 on this rig I couldn't get the gamespeed right, but then I
read here the other day about the CPU switch in the shortcut (forgot about
that the first time... heh; old age sucks) so I used that this time and
the gamespeed seemed right. But even though the gamespeed was right the
gameplay wasn't smooth at all. I was playing against bots at Adept and
they were mopping the floor with me. It was as if they were on top of me
before I could react. I fooled around with it for a while and then
realized that the LCD had me locked in at 60fps. I tried turning off
vsync but that made the game run too fast again. I then tried using the
framerate-limiting switch in the .ini and that got me to 100fps with vsync
off, but gameplay still wasn't smooth. Then I dragged my system
downstairs to my office where I still have my trusty old Hitachi Superscan
CRT and lo and behold the gameplay was as smooth as silk with vsync turned
on.

So, is there a cure for this? I'm not going back to a CRT. For one thing
you can't even find a new CRT these days and besides a 21" model weighs a
freaking metric ton and on top of that I'm spoiled with the lightweight,
reflection-free goodness of an LCD monitor. Is there a way to get smooth
100fps gaming on an LCD? All my research says "no". :(

The cpu speed switch didn't work for me... but I solved my problem by
changing my OC settings a bit to match the way Windows understood my
multiplier. Currently, with VSync on, I'm running about as well or better
than I ever have.

So, what are your system specs? What sort of CPU are you using? If it is
an AMD dual core, there is a known problem and a fix.

Barring that, you could try taking the opengl renderer portion of your
unrealtournament.ini down to the bare essentials and adding your custom
settings one by one. Start with this

[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]
Translucency=True
VolumetricLighting=False
ShinySurfaces=True
Coronas=True
HighDetailActors=True
DetailTextures=True

No matter what those values are set to doesn't matter true or false.

And in the windows client section, do the same. Just take it down to the
bare essentials and add your custom settings one by one to see which one is
screwing you up. Start with someting like this:

[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
WindowedViewportX=640
WindowedViewportY=480
WindowedColorBits=32
FullscreenViewportX=1680
FullscreenViewportY=1050
FullscreenColorBits=32
Brightness=0.800000
MipFactor=1.000000
UseDirectDraw=True
UseJoystick=False
CaptureMouse=True
StartupFullscreen=True
CurvedSurfaces=False
LowDetailTextures=False
ScreenFlashes=True
NoLighting=False
SlowVideoBuffering=True
DeadZoneXYZ=True
DeadZoneRUV=False
InvertVertical=False
ScaleXYZ=1000.000000
ScaleRUV=2000.000000
MinDesiredFrameRate=28.000000
Decals=True
NoDynamicLights=True
SkinDetail=High
UseDirectInput=False
ParticleDensity=0
NoFractalAnim=False
TextureDetail=High

I'm with you Folk. Maybe I'm just old school but I hate LCD's too. I'd love
to find a stash of good crt monitors cause I swear I'd buy them all.

Well, any time you find yourself in my neck of the woods, there are maybe
ten or a dozen in my storage shed. I'm too cheap to give the dump the $6
fee they get for TVs and monitors.

I will admit it is difficult to calibrate an LCD (especially TN panels) to
give accurate color representation, but I'd never want to give up this 22"
widescreen I'm sitting at now.

I'm with you on the real estate issue. Mapping with a 1440X900 is so nice, I
have room for all the viewports. For just pure fragging though, I do like
the CRT's. They are not as "cartoony" as LCD.

You ever clean out your shed, I'm bringing a truck :)

CRT's were destroying my eyesight. I wouldn't go back to a CRT if you
paid me.

Hey Six,

It's not a performance issue. I have enough horsepower to run UT99 with
ridiculously high framerates, but because I'm on an LCD I'm stuck at 60fps
and that's simply not enough to give me smooth gameplay.

My LCD monitor is four years old now and maybe there's been improvements
in this area that I'm not aware of. All my research shows me improvements
in *ghosting* i.e. response time but I don't think that's my problem. Is
there such a thing as an LCD monitor that runs at > 60 fps with vsync on?

Yes. 120Hz LCDs are hitting the market now. Or maybe a better way to say
it: There are a couple on the market now and a few more coming Newegg has
a good price on the one that's been drawing a lot of attention because of
the size and price. Reviews are a little mixed, so I think I would suggest
reading a few professional reviews before making a purchase decision..

I'm not sure that Hz relates directly to refresh rate. My LCD has the
ability to run at either 60 or 75Hz. If I run at 75Hz UT still shows that
it's running at 60FPS?

Your monitor might accept 75 input and then convert it. I've read about it
some.

I think the 120hz LCDs are supposed to act more like a CRT with refresh
being tied to hz. At least, that's what the marketing stuff looks like.
LCDs really don't have a "refresh" rate, though. The science is different
than a CRT because it's all about the response time of changing the color of
each pixel rather than the speed of drawing lines across a screen. - The
marketing stuff does seem to indicate that you should be able to acheive 120
fps with vsync on in some games... but honestly, Folk - I haven't tried one
myself, so all I can go by is what I've read.

Seeing may very well be a different thing too. I'd check one out at the
electronics store first, just to be sure.
