I thought I read in one of the reviews (where the people got invited into the id offices) that it was like a cross between a chaingun and a railgun...? As in, very fast firing rails, with pinpoint accuracy unlike the current spread of the chaingun... Then again, it's probably end up being a radioactive-cow-shooting megaweapon or something, given how many stories get spread around with no resemblance to the truth!

Actually, the original goes something like:
Windows, a 32-bit front-end for a 16-bit shell to an 8-bit operating system
originally designed on a 4-bit processor by a 2-bit company that can't stand
1-bit of competition. :)

I might be stating the obvious here but the ultimate weapon would be a nuclear weapon, but that would kill you too. That would be ultimate but a bit stupid. I think another ultimate but very boring crap weapon would be an enemy disintegrator. When you fire it a beam comes out and scrambles the molecules leaving a sludge of organic material festering on the ground. If your looking for the most efficient weapon then it is a gun you don't have to fire, or point, or do anything. You just walk around and the enemies disappear. A bit like when you type dnmonsters in Duke Nukem 3D, a game which continues to entertain me much more than quake ever did, or quake 2 for that matter. I think sin and halflife are also better than quake and quake 2 but my computer is too shite to run them, which is a good thing really. I spend too much time on this evil invention as it is. Quake 3 is going to have to be really really good to cut any butter in the fps genre. Halflife and sin to a lesser extent have set quake 3 a task which it is unlikely to live up to. On a different subject altogether, what's trinity, is this quake 3 or something different. [snip with the industrial-strength cable-cutters] >A bit like when you type dnmonsters in Duke Nukem 3D, a game >which continues to entertain me much more than quake ever did, or quake 2 >for that matter. Hmmm, I played it for a bit and found it annoying more than anything... >I think sin and halflife are also better than quake and >quake 2 but my computer is too shite to run them, which is a good thing >really. Never played Sin, but Halflife definitely - IN SINGLE PLAYER. I am incredibly disappointed in the halflife network code and everything, the player animations are pretty poor... I mean, the models move around like it's a badly designed robot, no realistic movement or anything, and it's like it's on a conveyor belt or something... Skeletal animation? Big deal if you only use it like they have... Quake and Quake2 still can't be beaten for long-term multiplayer interest. >I spend too much time on this evil invention as it is. Hahahahah ditto! > Quake 3 is >going to have to be really really good to cut any butter in the fps genre. Quake3 isn't competing with any previous fps, because it is designed only for multiplayer use. Sin and Halflife are fantastic when you're working through the single player levels, because you can include atmosphere, a storyline (optional, according to some software companies, id included) etc, but single player does not sustain a game. Monsters included in the levels nearly always react in exactly the same way, and bots (so far) are still a long way short of a human player... Multiplayer against REAL opponents is definitely the only thing which keeps a game in use months and months after it is bought. Quake 3 is simply going to be a more visually spectacular, customisable deathmatch game - if you want a game with a storyline, don't buy it. If you want a game which will keep you playing for months to come, buy something like Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament (they'll probably have their act together by then) and play against real people. >Halflife and sin to a lesser extent have set quake 3 a task which it is >unlikely to live up to. I disagree. Halflife and Sin set an example which the fps has been heading down for a long time, and leading it in a big way too. Quake3 is going down a different, although controversial path, and in my opinion will be all the better for it. After all, id are going to license their Quake3 engine to companies, (like they did for Sin and Halflife, remember) meaning that companies who WANT to follow the single-player concept, can have a super-powerful 3d graphics engine to go with it, as well as probably some of the finest network code. >On a different subject altogether, what's trinity, is this quake 3 or >something different. I was under the impression that Trinity was what Quake3 was before it became Quake3 - it was a graphics engine which was meant to blow the socks off everything else around, but id decided to cut back some of the features and turn it into a multiplayer game, more as an experiment in marketing than anything else. An 'experiment in marketing' wasn't the reason id chose to make it a multiplayer game. Originally, Quake III was going to be just another game along exactly the same lines as Quake II - with the same pseudo-mission- based storyline. But id couldn't get very enthusiastic about basically doing exactly the same thing again. So they decided to go in a new direction. -- Andrew Gillett http://argnet.fatal-design.com/ ICQ: See homepage "Sir, sure am, sir." - Chelmer Monkton, Starship Losers

I wasn't saying that they were doing it just to test the marketing potential, sorry, I just meant that it is an approach no other company was willing to take before, so they decided that since they were financially secure as a company they could afford to try making something they WANTED to make, and see how it sold. They could handle if it was a flop, but were interested in just how such a product would be taken to by consumers. The range of reactions has already been very interesting, with people saying that it will suck with no single player, and others saying who gives a flying fook about single, Quake3 multi is going to be awesome. Experiment in marketing just meant they were unsure of how it was going to sell, and were doing it to test the water for future multiplayer only games.

By the looks of it, Q3 will probably do better than most games just based on the reputation of Q1&Q2.
