Sorry if I'm behind the news, but is this how it's going to be for Q2? I don't want the Quake Dude to be no bleeping Mech! Jay

I think it refers to his name (Arkom) - I'm not sure though. As for the apple/orange bit - Quake and Unreal appear to be the same genre of game however, Hexen has certain other aspects to it so I will agree with you there. I reckon Unreal looks best because of the shadow features and the overall looks of the game. It looks brighter and less grey. However, Quake 2 does seem a pretty good rival and I imagine the people who have Quake (I being one of them) might choose to buy Quake 2 because they already have the first and it is a natural progression. We will have to wait for the magazine reviews and the demos from them. I haven't seen anything about Hexen 2 except for the occasional screen shot. I didn't really like Hexen so for me - it will be a choice of either Quake 2 or Unreal. Neil On 31 Aug 1997 13:01:14 GMT, "Zar" <h-la...@post8.tele.dk> wrote: >What is a troll? What is the big deal anyway? Doesn't anyone besides me plan to buy both Quake 2 and Unreal? As for the Hexen 2 demo....nothing to get excited about if you ask me. Kind of sucked. Hey now! Someone who thinks like I do! I am planning to buy both Quake 2 and Unreal. I think both games have merit and are good, I don't understand why this rivalry exists. As for Hexen 2, I thought the graphics were awesome, some of the best I've seen (I'm also using a Rightous 3d). As for gameplay and level design, I think it sucked. It would have really been neat if it actually looked like you were approaching a castle, I mean you'd be in a town with a wall towards the end, and would be able to see the ramparts of the castle over the town walls. It looked to me the same way all the other quake levels have looked so far... a series of rooms with sky textures, not like taking a big room and making the stuff within it. I guess I was just hoping for castles like the one in the newest unreal screenshot that shows the WHOLE castle from a distance. That would have been cool... extremely cool. And also what's with the weapons? I should have expected it... Heretic's were just like it, always a flaw I thought and why I didn't bother with Hexen. I would've liked it better if it had been more RPGish, not some gay "shoot magical spinning blades from a battle axe" JMHO -Daniel Warner ScreamTree Graphix and Soundz <screa...@monad.net> wrote: >What is the big deal anyway? Simple. Two different (rival) companies. One company (id) being the
innovators and trailblazers of the Wolfenstein/Doom/Quake game genre, and the
other (Epic) being the ones who are looking to raise the standardsof that
very genre with their first venture into it. Also, had Epic been using the
Quake engine, or some derivative of it (ie. Raven, Apogee (Duke Nukem
Forever), ION Storm, etc..), there wouldn't be as intense a rivalry..
However, Epic has this whole new kind of 3D engine, and so the id-faithful
are probably feeling challenged/threatened. Just imagine the rivalry if Prey
were coming out the same time as Q2 and Unreal... Man.. that would be a fun
thing to see! I'm glad it isn't though.. not because of the rivalry.. because
of my wallet! I'm buying all three, as well as Half-Life.. that game looks
intense, too. I see it this way.. A good game is a good game, no matter who
makes it, no matter what their track-record is. If someone isn't going to buy
a game because it isn't made by their favorite game company and it's a thorn
in their side - well, then they're losing out.

You're talking about two different game engines there between Hexen and
Unreal. Hexen II shows (most) of the same limitations as Quake because it's
using the Quake engine - albeit a heavily modified (improved in my opinion)
one. Unreal has a completely different engine allowing for "inter-level"
travel - that's one of the features, I believe, that set it apart from the
likes of Quake from the get-go.. It's not a level-by-level layout.. It's one
connected world. I personally really liked the layout in some spots.. I love
the way they simulated the cliffs and the varying landscapes - that could not
have been easy... And you gotta love the flying sheep!!

I died laughing when I saw that.

I thought Unreal used the Quake engine. I may be wrong (I concentrate more on Quake and Quake2, as well as the upcoming Jedi Knight), but I could have sworn that I have read about 15-20 different times that Unreal uses the modified Quake engine. -- ZyberGoat E-mail: zybe...@hotmail.com ICQ UIN:944556 Homepage:http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Alley/1998/ (please remove the "nospam" from my reply email address) Mike Vogel <mi...@lauderdale.net> wrote in article <341ED9CF...@lauderdale.net>... > > > Daniel Warner wrote: > > > Hey now! Hahah, no. Unreal is using the Unreal engine, which is an engine reportedly under construction for the last three and a half years. And the game's still not out. -- Slipgate - AKA Ismail Saeed Webmaster, http://www.quake2.com mailto:slip...@quake2.com
