Simple. Two different (rival) companies. One company (id) being the
innovators and trailblazers of the Wolfenstein/Doom/Quake game genre, and the
other (Epic) being the ones who are looking to raise the standardsof that
very genre with their first venture into it. Also, had Epic been using the
Quake engine, or some derivative of it (ie. Raven, Apogee (Duke Nukem
Forever), ION Storm, etc..), there wouldn't be as intense a rivalry..
However, Epic has this whole new kind of 3D engine, and so the id-faithful
are probably feeling challenged/threatened. Just imagine the rivalry if Prey
were coming out the same time as Q2 and Unreal... Man.. that would be a fun
thing to see! I'm glad it isn't though.. not because of the rivalry.. because
of my wallet! I'm buying all three, as well as Half-Life.. that game looks
intense, too. I see it this way.. A good game is a good game, no matter who
makes it, no matter what their track-record is. If someone isn't going to buy
a game because it isn't made by their favorite game company and it's a thorn
in their side - well, then they're losing out.

You're talking about two different game engines there between Hexen and
Unreal. Hexen II shows (most) of the same limitations as Quake because it's
using the Quake engine - albeit a heavily modified (improved in my opinion)
one. Unreal has a completely different engine allowing for "inter-level"
travel - that's one of the features, I believe, that set it apart from the
likes of Quake from the get-go.. It's not a level-by-level layout.. It's one
connected world. I personally really liked the layout in some spots.. I love
the way they simulated the cliffs and the varying landscapes - that could not
have been easy... And you gotta love the flying sheep!!
"BAAA-AAAa-aaaaaa-aaaa.....!!!"
I died laughing when I saw that.
