Quake 2 in Linux?

After a very brief attempt at Windows Vista, I decided it's time to
move to Linux. During my research, I've run across some references to
Quake 2 and games based on the engine.

So what exactly do I need to do to run Q2? I'm guessing Windows based
mods don't work in Linux?

The Q2 engine worked "OK" under Linux as a client. Today, OpenGL is
probably your best bet for graphics mode. The last version of Q2,
v3.21 was available in source form. Virtually all the source code is
available now, including the single player DLL. The skins, maps and
content are copyright idSoftware but if you have your Quake2 CD the
content can be loaded into Linux.

Server mode doesn't depend on graphics content or display capability.
Most multiplayer mods are compiled and run on Linux with R1q2 server
or modified Q2 code.
