What are those people's thoughts here reguarding id Software planning on producing Quake 2 for Win 95 only? Frankly, I'm glad the company has finally gotten around to it, and has stopped messing with DOS...

Everything runs faster under DOS assuming you are willing to duplicate all the specialized programming done for various video cards and sound cards to get the equal speed increase of the specialized drivers for Windows. But considdering that the special coding for each card is virtually impossible nowadays, Windows will almost surely run a good 3D game better - especially with DirectX 5. Tim.

The Wolfman: id doesn't like Microsoft, your right. But they are writing Quake 2 to run on Windows 95 and NT. Don't believe me, e-mail Carmack yourself. Anyways, the original statement was that it was being written for that platform, not whether or not that platform is good for games. And yes, people are writing games for Windows now, in case you haven't noticed. That's because everybody (all the basic computer joes) are getting computers with Windows, not DOS like the 80s used to be. You seem to think that because of issues with it it will never happen, but it already has, not because of issues with the OS, but because of how widespread it is. What's the point with replying to the multiple messages of this thread all with the same general message? Yes, we know Microsoft sucks. Quake 2 is still being written for Windows though. I'm not a betting person but whoever wanted to wager on that (not sure who wrote that at this point), sure I'll bet them, since its been ANNOUNCED that it is already, and in fact the game is using DLLs. Same for Daikatana. -- Slipgate - AKA Ismail Saeed mailto:slip...@quake2.com http://www.quake2.com ICQ pager: http://wwp.mirabilis.com/1088038

Being an original beta tester I would think that you would realize the huge undertaking that Win95 was. With all of the legacy H/W and S/W that must be made compatible it is a wonder that 95' worked at all, let alone as well as it does. (Can you say "User Error") With the progress of Memphis and NT5 (Memphis being the last 95' type OS) we will all be using NT in future releases. Getting an Industry such as the PC industry to work with each other instead of against each other is also a major undertaking that only a company like Microsoft could pull off. We the users are the beneficiaries of there forward thinking. Sounds like you should continue to use DOS and quit whining about 95'. BTW if you would occasionally read the MS HCL (hardware compat list) you would see that the AWE64 isn't there. I suppose you will blame 95' for this also. The Pentium Pro's Floating Point Unit is also not optimized for 16 bit code, of which most current games are written. As for a gaming platform, although DirectX may have problems, at least there is a light at the end of the long dark DOS tunnel. There are games that take full advantage of that platform and play very well, example Motoracer GP. This is not meant as a flame but rather a way for you to understand that the OS cannot be held responsible for your Bad purchasing decisions (PentiumPro, Awe64). Later Mitch
