Making new Q2 maps?

I was thinking about making some new maps for Quake2. I have already
downloaded Quark and its a very powerful program but I can't figure out how
to save an actual map so that I can use it in Q2?

I just thought if I saved it as a .pak file that I would be able to use it
in Q2 - but so far that doesn't seem to be happening!
