Quake 4 runs really jerky

Just installed Quake 4 and it runs really jerkey. I'm running a Dell Dimension, P4, 3.4ghz...Radeon X300 PCI Video w/ 128mb, and running 1gb RAM. Audio is a SB Audigy 2zs card. I'm having to run the game at 640X480 at "Low Quality" and with the weapons not showing, just to make it playable. (barely) Seems to me that the game should run better on my setup...any advice as to what I might do? Thanks...

I'm running a lowly (yuk yuk!) A64 at a measley 2.4 gHz, 2 gigs PC3200 in dual channel, 6800GT (AGP), onboard 8 channel audio and XP Pro SP2. I have no benchmarks to offer, but running the game in the highest res my monitor AND Q4 supports, 1280x960-32 bits, I have everything cranked up with quality in High, not ultra (yet) and am seeing no slowdowns at all. Be nice to have a benchmark demo. I'm guessing that your mentioning 'PCI' is PCI express? And I'm not just an AMD fanboi knocking your P4 either. I have a P4 3.0E that does a great job. It's just that my AMD64 is a lot faster even running 2.4 ghz. It's an X2 4800+ :)

Be nice to have a benchmark demo. Essentially the same rig (DFI LANParty UT mobo) but with XP Pro 64, and the PCIE 6800GT. I tried running at 1280x1024 in Ultra but it was too choppy. I backed it down to High and things smoothed right out. Ultra probably needs a 7800 to get enough texture bandwidth, as it felt like texture lag, the kind of thing normally cured by looking around in all directions in a new level to force the textures to load.

Well, as the UpsetChaps guides and tweaks pages say, Ultra mode for Doom3 and Quake4 are ideally suited for 512meg vid cards. They said that the severe texture lag and/or thrashing would happen with 256 meg cards. OR, if PCI-e actually *worked* then couldn't system ram be used for the video texture memory at full bandwidth? I'm not sure at all how that is supposed to work. I just know folks talk here in the ng's about this not being so big a thing, yet. ALso, I did try XP Pro 64 with Far Cry 64 and that was really great. but, there aren't enough 64 bit peripheral drivers out even now for me to just shift over. So I didn't send in my XP Pro disk and keep X64 :-\ McG.

I'm playing quake 4 on a 2.8, 1gig, nvidia 6800 oc (256M). Runs great, great game. I tried ultra quality and it brought my $500 card to its knees. Next level down runs just fine. I agree, sounds like this player needs a new video card if he/she wants to go bigger/better.

The 'old' one is a P4 3.0E, 2 gigs. This one is an X2 4800+, 2 gigs and 6800GT 256 meg. Q4 is lookin good! Can't wait to see some of the old Q2 CTF maps for it :) McG.

Most games run the CPU as a single thread unless they've cooked up something on the PC side. 6800 runs parallel. Still, sounds sweet. I looked at Dell's 3.8, all dressed up, about $3,700. I've already got three dells, 2.8, 2.6 and a 400mhz running smoothwall firewall.

Ok. I am ready to get a card. What card should I get just for fps? Any vid cap or tv ports or bells and whistles would be a waste. I have a p4 2Ghz machine

Strangely once I disconnected my Iomega Parallel Port Zip Drive (which was using the drivers supplied by WINXP), the problem went away. Just something to consider for people who might have Zip Drives connected and having problems.
