Getting ready for Quake -- sound cards

I'm getting my hardware ready for Quake (and Quake-like) games. Besides
getting a Rendition-based 3D card in the near future, the only other weak spot
in my system is the Sound Blaster 16 SCSI-2 card. I like it because it's so
multifunctional -- in addition to just functioning as a sound card, I hook
all of my MIDI keyboards to the card, and it's also my NEC SCSI CD-ROM drive
controller, plus my Sidewinder joystick port.

But the FM sound is getting old. I know about the old WaveBlaster
daughtercard, and wonder if this would be a viable upgrade. I do have a
Roland MT-32, but a lot of games don't support it properly anymore. My ISA
slots are pretty filled up (I have one left). Does anyone have any
suggestions for upgrading?

Thanks
Mark

Quake's music, if any, will be CD audio so don't bother upgrading your
soundcard just for Quake.

Dude, don't wory about the FM sounds on your card. Nine inch nails is writting
the soundtrack for Quake and it won't be played on your FM synth. It will be
recorded in a studio and put on the same CD with Quake as a regular sound track.
Most new games are following this trend. Examples: Hexen, Screamer, MWII,
LodeRunner for Win95, and so on.

I would write a nasty answer for this one if I knew what I was talking
about, but since I don't, I won't. Still, what does the type of
synthesis matter, if nothing is synthesized? A basic SB 16 is still
pretty adequate to play those crap 11kHz samples we get for sound
effects in PC games.

A friend of mine who has a Roland sound canvas (SCC-1) keeps elbowing
me to buy a better (I have a soundblaster 16 VE) sound card. He seems
to think that Roland has a sound canvas type board that will fit onto
the SB16, just like the waveblaster upgrade does. If this is true, you
may want to look for Roland's web site and see if it is available. It
would offer MUCH better midi music, and would not need to take up
another slot. It sounds like the perfect thing for your situation.

Get a Roland Sound Canvas daughter board for your sb16
or if you don't have a socket for it, get it as an isa card.

Roland do a SCC add-on for the Soundblaster, but according to latest
press you should really check out the new Yamaha XG daughterboard for
the Soundblaster. It has 676 instruments and a sound quality that apparently
surpasses the SoundCanvas. And it's only 150 UK pounds, which is far less
than the Roland board.
