Hmm... ever try DCK? Gnab it from FTP.CDROM.COM and give it a spin.
It's the best editor i've found - makes wad building a piece of cake.
I agree that many level editor are discouraging... DCK is pretty solid
though. If you dig CAD, you'll dig DCK.

Quake will be more than a bit more difficult to build levels for i
think. I say this because I believe myself to be quite good at building
DOOM wads and so one day i figured, "What the hell, gimmie a Descent
level editor and i'll crank out some groovy deathmatch levels!" :BZZT!:
Wrong, try again. After messin' around with Devil for a while (the
descent level editor I dug up somewhere..) i realized that the 3d world
gets really funky and one cannot make something just 'look' right. It
must _BE_ right. Can't have any gaps/holes/unconnected vertices. Maybe
i didn't give it enough time but it looked to be a bitch. I made a few
rooms, threw in some monsters, and nursed my wounds all the way back to
DOOM.

Devil sucked. After looking at the shot of the Quake level editor
I don't think you have to worry. The problem with devil is that
the assumption was that because the world is 3D the level editor
had to be also. The shot of the Quake editor appears to show that
Id is using a flat level editor. This is similar to doom level
editting. Imagine taking DCK. Allowing multiple floors and cielings
in any one sector. Give properties of slant to the floors and
ceilings and you are done. Looks a little like how they are doing
their editing anyway.
