Has the trick to get moon apearence (sp?) ever been resolved? If not,
here's my theory: it depends on when you put the quarter in. I'm a
beginner, made it to pit stage, and saw the figures flying across the
moon. I did nothing special, no flawless or fatalities on any previous
stages, so that would be my best guess. Any thoughts?

When did you put your quarter in the machine? Was it when
you saw 2 characters fighting on the pit stage during demo mode?
I will see what happens today when I insert a quarter while
the demo-pit_stage screen is up. Your theory sounds plausible -
I will put it to the test later.

It has nothing to do with quarters. My MK is set on FREE PLAY, and we have a
standard method now for getting to Reptile:

1.) Start a two player game.
2.) Kill the opponent.
3.) Repeat until the stage is Warrior Shrine.
4.) Don't continue the second player.
5.) First player is in a one player game at the pit against the first opponent.
6.) If shadows do not appear, hit player two start and repeat.

A few interesting things came out of this pattern:

1.) If you lose to Reptile and start a two player game and then drop back into
a one player game, the opponent in the one player game always plays at a much
higher difficulty. (i.e. My game is set to Very Easy, and the first opponent
never uses a special move except for Sonya's leg flip. The opponent will play
at approximately the level of Very Hard Endurance 3.)

2.) If there are shadows across the moon, and you mess up, hit start on player
two. Repeat the steps. When you drop back into a one player game, the shadows
will be present. You can even do this after a blown fatality.

3.) We use block for slides and fatalities quite happily and still get
Reptile. I haven't spent a lot of time experimenting to see if block does make
a difference at all.

4.) Reptile is often succeptible to jumping back and kicking. (i.e. Press up
and away and hit either kick button, even a punch.) He tends to walk
(quickly!) into your foot/fist.

5.) The string "ERMACS WINS!" does NOT appear in my version 3.0 ROMs, although
all other similar strings are there.

6.) MK was probably written in C. All strings are run through a routine like
"printf" as they contain "\n" and "%d" and the like.

I don't think you need two people to play for the appearence. No one
played me when I got to them (unless two guys played the game before me).
As to the one out of fourty matches, I've seen the appearence a lot for
such a low ratio. Unfortunetly, I can't remember when I put the quarter in.
