Is there anyway to play it in Windows Vista? The old computer with Windows 2000 plays it as well as it ever did, but is it possible to do it on Vista? It installed on the computer, from the original DOOM II disk, but it never loaded up. Just the music played. (Which was kinda hilarious, cause just the main DOOM theme song was going, and nothing else was happening. :)) Any suggestions, or help?? Thanks

You can get the DOS executable from the shareware, if it wasn't included in your CD. ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/doom/doom19s.zip

These sites might help http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/12/31/running-old-and-older-programs-or-games-on-vista/ http://www.vistax64.com/vista-games/144391-old-games-vista.html But the other alternative is to download JDoom or PrBoom and use a port to play DOOM2.WAD. Though personally, I hate the maps on ZDoom compared to the ones I'm used to. :)

The ones I'm used to, the non-Zdoom ones, are much easier for me to examine and figure out where the heck things are. I mean, the color coding on ZDoom is nice, but I'm used to the regular ones, is all. :) (I'm talking about the auto-mapping, when you hit Tab, not the levels themselves.)

I see what you mean now. There's an option that makes the map colours behave like Doom, which I believe is "map color set" in the automap menu. This is probably the easiest way to get sane map colours. Otherwise, I agree the defaults are terrible, but they all seem to be able to be independently reconfigured, if you can be bothered to make the effort to do so. -- http://rjy.org.uk/

I know what you mean :-) I would like a map that is cross between JDoom and PrBoom JDoom's is such that yellow, red and blue doors (both card and skull) are brightened yellow, red and blue compared with other lines. This is useful on very large levels where it may not be obvious where the door are. PrBoom is such that secret areas are marked in purple. Stephen Howe

PrBoom does this as well, but arguably the defaults for other lines are such that locked doors don't really stand out that well. I reconfigured all the map colours years ago. >PrBoom is such that secret areas are marked in purple. Indeed. But I do think it shouldn't show up unvisited secrets at all, unless you've used iddt. map_secret_after should be removed. -- http://rjy.org.uk/
