Oh, map as in automap! I see what you mean now.

There's an option that makes the map colours behave like Doom, which I
believe is "map color set" in the automap menu. This is probably the
easiest way to get sane map colours. Otherwise, I agree the defaults are
terrible, but they all seem to be able to be independently reconfigured,
if you can be bothered to make the effort to do so.
