Well, I got the chainsaw on level II episode 1 (I got the shareware version, 1.1). However, once I switch to any other weapon the chainsaw completely disappears. And while I got it, the '4' in the weapons status does _not_ light up. Also, the exit door seems to stop functioning. I haven't tracked the exact point but if I do _something_ in that level, the exit door just freezes. It seems that its either opening the computer maze or getting the chainsaw. There is mention of doom game save files in the FAQ, and one of the save file editors (doomed or doomed2) mentioned .DSG files. However, when I do 'dir' I see no trace of anything like a save file (e.g., one per used saved game slot). Definitely no .dsg files. Where is it hiding? I use the game in low detail mode on a 386/33 and the game _flies_. But when I switch to high-detail, it becomes jerky, but there is no visible change in the image. Now, it is clearly doing _something_ extra... What? BTW, I'm one of those who really need the F11 gamma-correction - otherwise the image is almost completely dark. Is this related somehow? Thanks, Oren. --

The chainsaw is not number 4, the chainGUN in number 4.
The chainsaw replaces your fists as number 1.
The savegame files should be in c:\doomdata.
I think that that is a bug, since I have installed Doom on my D: drive,
but c'est la vie.

The chainsaw replaces your fist (weapon #1), which you might have found out if you had run the README.EXE file that came with DOOM. Just to refresh your memory: Weapons Num Name 1 Fist or Chainsaw (Once you get Chainsaw, fist is gone) 2 Pistol 3 Shotgun 4 ChainGUN (You know, gattling gun, like in Terminator 2 or Predator) 5 Rocket Launcher 6 Plasma Gun (not in shareware version) 7 BFG 9000 (also not in shareware version) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | "The box...you opened it. Just a note here. Your fists do not disappear when you get the chainsaw. I found no solution to the exit door jamming on me, though. Maybe if I could drag a barrel to it and then explode it :-) > There is mention of doom game save files in the FAQ, and one of the save file > editors (doomed or doomed2) mentioned .DSG files. Putting them in a sub-directory of the root directory is the weirdest behaviour I ever encountered. Many thanks to all who pointed this out to me. BTW, this should be somewhere in the FAQ... > I use the game in low detail mode on a 386/33 and the game _flies_. It has been suggested that (i) my monitor is not good enough (especially after applying the gamma correction) to display a noticable difference; and (ii) that it only really matters for far away objects, subtle shading, etc. I suppose it is time to switch to a 486... Thanks for all for the info, Oren. --

This will load DOS w/out any TSRs, etc. Then just \cd to Doom and play. Remember tho--if you use yr mouse you must load it seperately-- just type 'mouse' when you get yr initial DOS prompt. Kill early, and often!

Notice how the weapons numbers are like TV channels, and start at 2?
Number 1 is the weapon you revert to when you run out of ammunition in
everything else. At the beginning of the game this is your fist, but
once you grab the chainsaw it takes over this place.
Number 4 on the weapons board is for a chaingun which fires the same
bullets as the pistol, at a much faster rate.
