The chainsaw replaces your fist (weapon #1), which you might have found out if
you had run the README.EXE file that came with DOOM. Just to refresh your
memory:

Weapons
Num Name
1 Fist or Chainsaw (Once you get Chainsaw, fist is gone)
2 Pistol
3 Shotgun
4 ChainGUN (You know, gattling gun, like in Terminator 2 or Predator)
5 Rocket Launcher
6 Plasma Gun (not in shareware version)
7 BFG 9000 (also not in shareware version)
