DOOM and adlib fx

I was overjoyed when I watched DOOM being played on another machine with a
sounblaster pro but was greatly disheartened when I took it home and
discovered that only the music works for an adlib sound board. I realize
serious gamers would scoff at an adlib and simply have no sympathy but is
there anything I can do besides shell out the big dough for a new board
just so I can enjoy DOOM in its full splendour? Half of the fun of DOOM is
the hilarious sound effects. Why make it adlib music compatible and not
sound? Please, any suggestions, ideas, comments?

The reason that there isn't sound fx for the adlib is that all the sound
fx in the game are digitized-i.e. they were sampled from an actual sound,
not synthesized (sp.). The adlib (to my knowledge) cannot handle
digitized sounds; therefore, no sound fx from your board. My suggestion
would be (if you _really_ want the full effect of doom) to go out and buy
a SoundBlaster family board. The SB16 would be best, but the SBPro is
cheaper, and if you're on a tight budget the SB is probably _real_ cheap
(if they even make it anymore).

Now, I'm not one who goes out and buys new hardware because of one game,
but this is different. This is DOOM! :)

Hope that clears things up.

You should be able to buy a plain (original) Sound Blaster for around $70
to $80 at any computer store. It's only monophonic and 12khz sample rate,
but it works.

Well, start savin' your nickels 'n dimes because AdLib is just a synthesizer.
It can do FM music, and that's all.

Granted, there are several programs in existence that force the AdLib to
play back digitized sound, but it sounds like crap and takes 80 to 90 percent
of your CPU's power the whole time the sound plays (and any music that's
going is cut off when this happens), and that's even on a 486!

I used to have an AdLib. I've regretted the purchase since the day they came
out with the SoundBlaster. If you're going to spend the money, and want a
good soundboard get a SoundBlaster Pro or a 16. If you want to put out more
money but end up paying less for SB Pro and getting a double-speed internal
CD-ROM drive and a crapload of CD-ROMs then grab yourself a Sound FX
Multimedia 16 Ultra Elite Upgrade Kit. At $500 the stuff they cram into that
thing is unbelievable!

In any case getting yourself a SoundBlaster compatible card will give you
great sound, and getting a stereo board (such as the Pro or the 16) makes
DOOM even better! Imp shoots fireball from left, you hear your left side light
up into flames... Great effects.

Sorry 'bout the disappointment. Doesn't it suck when we get sold on bad
sound boards?

Later!

Just a thought: if you DO end up getting a new sound board just to play
DOOM, you might as well get a Gravis Ultrasound. There really is nothing
better to play DOOM with out there. (And, of course, it works fairly well
to extrememly well with most other software as well.)

JMHO, of course.

Hmm.. why ?

Sounds like waste of money to me..

The Gravis Ultrasound is so much better than any SB you'll find..
It'll even deliver music that can be listened to, the SB midi music in Doom (
in all games) is pure crap.

I haven't tested it yet, but Doom is supposed to use 3D sound on the GUS if
you have 1megabyte of ram on the card..
