I agree, 100%. I'm a programmer now, but, used to earn my coin as a photographer in NYC. Light simply does not behave the way ID programmed it to behave. Light bounces off of most surfaces, will varying degrees of absorbstion into the surface, and fill the environment as diffused light. As a result, this diffused light would fill the shadows. Shadows would still be darker than the scene in general, but somewhat luminous and allow one to see details inside of them. The lack of diffuse light falling into the shadows is the reason Doom 3 lacks dimension. A feeling of depth in the scene is lost, since the shadows are empty and, hence, flat. In photography and cinimatography this would be considered very bad form. Imagine watching a 2 hour film with this type of lighting. It would be unbearable. Fortunatly, the director and producer would fire the DP after seeing to first rushes. LOL. This lighting effect is refered to as "lunar lighting" and should be used with restraint. When it is, it can be very effective and interesting.
