What you have encountered is the same as a facinating shrine. BEWARE FACINATINGSHRINES!!!!. It also should have raised some spell by 2 or more levels, but it's not worth it. Same with Ornate Shrines. Sacred shrine screws with HP and MP too, but i'm not positive it's a bad way. Hope it helps.
