Command & Conquer Generals problem. My kids have a PIII 1.0g ASUS V7100 MX400 64mb video card 400mb memory. Windows 2000 SP4 DX9.0b when playing the game the landscape keeps disappearing leaving a black ground with just the buildings showing. this only happens when the mouse is left hovering over buildings for the building labels to appear and you are building something. however, when the building has finished the landscape stays black!!! the game is patched to the max. any ideas? Thanks -Demon

It did exactly this with ZH (running abysamally slow with Generals - I am told EA tweaked things in Generals to try and maintain the game speed at the expense of graphics). I dropped in a 64MB Ti card and everything was sweet. In fact shortly thereafter I upgraded just about everything else as well and now Generals, ZH, MOLHAA and Call of Duty couldn't be sweeter. Basically you need to ditch the MX chipset. Neil A

The weird thing is the game was running ok until I tried to restore a backup... i needed to format the kids pc so i made a backup of the generals folder so my son did not lose his progress. unfortnately the game does not have a specific "save" folder so i had to make a copy the whole folder onto another disk. when i re-installed the game it ran perfectly. i then copied the backup game (simple copy and paste) over the newly installed game to restore my sons progress, started the game up and wallop - corrupt graphics. to rectify this problem i uninstalled the game again and then re-installed it (telling my son he would have to start again from scratch). but the graphics were still corrupt. so i formatted the pc again re-installed windws etc (last night), re-installed the game but the grpahics are still corrupt!!!! how scary is that??? hopefully someone wil be able to help, as my son saved his pcoket money to buy this game. -Demon PS. This whole post refers to Command & Conquer Generals plus the Zero Hour Expansion.

I see two problems. First of all, with a GeForce 4 or earlier card, you should use the 45.23 driver version, and not the latest 50.xx driver versions which are optimised for GeForce FX cards and newer and have known issues with older cards. Second of all, there is in fact a savegame folder, but you didn't notice it. It is in \My Documents\Command and Conquer Generals\ (for Generals) and \My Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour\ (for ZH). These folders contains savegames, options, profiles, replays, and downloaded maps. See http://www.planetcnc.com/generals/help/faq.shtml#backup and http://www.planetcnc.com/generals/zerohour/help/faq.shtml#backup for more details about these two folders. Thirdly, you must patch up both Generals and Zero Hour. Note that the patches are maintained independently e.g. patch 1.07 for Generals does not affect Zero Hour in the slightest. -- - Tim G.
