Wing Commander II just hangs?? HELP!

Hi,

I am running WingCommander II from a Stacker drive. It runs just fine,
but when I select exit to DOS, it hangs, leaving the "exiting to DOS"
on the screen. The only way I can recover is to ctl-alt-del :-(

Does anybody have a clue as to why this is happening?? I have COMSPEC
defined. What am I leaving out?? This instructions leave a lot to be
desired about system configuration. BTW this is on a Gateway 2K 486/33
w/ 16MB ram.

Wing Commander II is NOT compatible with Stacker! I found this out the
hard way. The game worked for the first 20 missions or so but would
hang periodically. But then there came one mission where I could not go
past a certain point. I called Origin and they said that once the
missions got complex, WCII wouldn't work with Stacker. They knew of
the problem but couldn't figure out a solution. It was a serious pain in the
rear for me because it is not convienent to reconfigure Stacker. I was
pissed and wanted my money back from Stacker because supposedly they
guarentee it to work with anything. But I found out that the extent of
their warrently is to replace any software if Stacker screws it up
somehow. They don't give refunds.

Anyway, to make a long story short, you have do deStac 20 megs or so
of your drive and put WCII there.

Try running with the turbo button off. Also, did you load WCII with
the files unpacked (15meg of space) or packed (~11 meg of space)
because you may be unpacking files twice from a stacker drive
and this is causing problems. Also, find what version of EMM386
you are using and the specification. WCII likes to see
expanded memory. Occasionally, I have had a crash with a 486 with
the turbo button off, but it was intermittent.

Do NOT run WCII from a Stacker drive. There are all sorts of things that
MAY happen if you do, none of them good. My experience was that the sound
frequently went haywire (SB Pro card) and the game would occasionally hang.
A call to Origin confirmed the Stacker connection. I re-installed on the
non-stacked partition and all was well.

Sorry, Dylan: I've played all of the WC series through, some of them
twice, from a Stacker drive. Every one of my griends who have WC (II)
run it from a stacker drive. I've used several different cache programs
and memory managers, and the only problem I've run to is that I've had a
QEMM exception error 13 twice (and that's QEMM's fault, not Stacker's.)

I'd say that it has to do with something else in your system
configuration. The machines it most certainly has worked in include
286-16, 286-20, SX 16, SX 25-32 Cache, DX 25, DX 33-32 Cache; armed with
SCSI, IDE, MFM and you name it other hardware with greatly varying
software setups.

There really might be some compatibility problems between Stacker and
WC, but I nor any of my friends have ever discovered them, so it might
be possible that you could fix your system to run them both as well?
Hopefully so.

Did you know that you're one *LUCKY* sucker?

   I have a 486 with a 212Meg HD, Stackered(was).

WCII *ATE* my stacker drive. It deleted several parts of, lost a bunch
of sectors and locked the stacker drive. Don't use WCII with Stacker,
unless you have a recient backup. (I didn't, *snif* )

I seem to remember that Wing II is not supposed to run on a Stacker Drive
(even under STACKER v2.0) and therefore I am suprised that it works at all.
Wing II requires such power (ie Speed and Memory) that it cannot work properly
in any other enviroment than the DOS (or other OS) shell. You will remember
that it warns you not to try to run it under Windows, I think the same goes
for STACKER and any other enviroment.

Just thought I'd toss this one in to confuse everyone even further. WCII
*ATE* my hard drive WITHOUT stacker loaded (in fact, I've never used stacker
in my life). I was just flying along, and all of a sudden it bombed, and
put up a C:\> prompt in the graphics mode. When I rebooted and ran NDD,
LOTS of stuff on my HD was destroyed beyond recognition.

Only other things I was running that I thought might could cause problems
was QEMM and HyperDisk.

Go figure.

Ian

Do NOT run wc with stacker... it will hang randomly... I confirmed
this with Origin... you must make a non-stacker compressed area
on your drive which you can do by using the stac utility.

If you don't you will find that things will work in general, but now and then
your machine will hang.
