"Friendly Fire?" ROFL! I love it! Sure, lots of folks would
find it offensive, but would the game be outright banned? Banishment
should be reserved for indisputeably dangerous and harmful stuff, like
nuclear weapons (well, then again, we never even THINK of banning those..)
I don't think that a game called "Friendly Fire" would face a nationwide
ban in the US, and I don't think it should. The German reaction to
Wolfenstein 3D strikes me as terribly petty. If they will not even allow
video games a little freedom of expression, what will they do to
meaningful forms of expression like books and periodicals?
By the way, if you can't think of a sicker idea for a video
game, that's ok... Its been done for you. There was a pay-for-play
game some time ago called "Torture Chamber" or something close, in
which the object was to, well, torture people. They would be tied
to racks, or manacled into an iron maiden, and would scream little
digitized screams and bleed digital blood as you slowly dispatched
them. This game had no political overtones, and so it wasn't banned
as far as I know. I suppose if the designers had decided that the
victims were all Jewish, or German, or Left-Handed Anabaptists, for
that matter, there would have been an uproar. But I sure hope that
no one would have tried to BAN it. Its just a game, for crying
out loud.
