Away for a bit over a year from csipg.strategic and I see only 265 posts - is the group dead or the usenet dead?

Been largely busy with work and life, pulled the new headers in the
group to find 265 new posts only.

This begs a question - is it just that strategic / turn based is
largely dead, or is it the entire Usenet community.

Any thoughts what the current equivalent for the csipg.strategic would
be with a decent signal/noise ratio?

I kinda dislike the thought of continuing to pay Usenet (the service)
for the dubious privilege

This particular group isn't very active currently but other parts of
Usenet are still going strong.

Usenet gaming groups are dying, pretty much dead. Title specific forums
seemed to have filled in that niche.

I'd point you to the Gamers with Jobs forums for general discussions about
gaming and threads about genres such as Strat TB.
http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/

I'd recommend getting an account on eternal september and drop any pay for
usenet accounts. http://www.eternal-september.org/

OTOH that means that typically only old-timers with lots of valuable
experience post on USENET (with fewer flaming trolls than the web fora,
as far as I can see). I still get useful/interesting info from my
favourite USENET groups.

Highly recommended! I switched when my ISP's NNTP support started
flaking out too regularly.

It's possible that your nntp server has a short article lifespan set.

But you are probably right, there's pretty little traffic in this
newsgroup. Maybe because there aren't many decent and interesting new
strategy games coming out? Or maybe too many of us have hit that
Alzheimer's age and wandered off with a slightly dazed look on their
face and not found their way back. What do I know.

I can say that rec.arts.sf.written is still very active, if i go away
for a week or two I may come back to 2000+ new articles.
But yes, it's pretty slow in the gaming ngs. {sigh}. Would be nice if
some decent stuff was published. It seems that all the corporate suits
are interested in is pushing FPS-style [insert franchise here]#27 and
don't go in for producing new or innovative things. I on the other hand
don't care one whit for that fps stuff. Arena was about the last one I
spent a lot of time with.

Thanks Carl - I only occasionally find myself moved to post, so
should be more than plenty.

Appreciate all teh other old hands who responded, I am on a decent
service, the usenet is also a business name, its just that it doesnt
seem to serve a useful purpose anymore.
