Frighteningly, you must have been composing that at exactly the same
time I was. At least you got better newsgroup coverage.

Dam steam sales. More games I don't have time for or hard drive
space.

I thought that the older games released on steam would have been
tweaked to work on W7 32 & 64, but I found that is not always the
case. Need For Speed Shift would crash when I tried to launch it.
Searched online and found that it needs to be set to run in WXP
compatibility mode. I did not think it was that old.
There should be a note in the Steam store game requirements list or
some where that tells you what you need to do for the game to run with
WVista, W7.

Need For Speed: Shift was released one month before Windows 7, so I'm
thinking the developer might not offer support for it, although Vista had
been out 2 or 3 years by then. That being said, I see that it includes XP,
Vista, and Win 7 in the System Requirements. Have you tried running it as
Administrator?

Yah, It was a while ago and I got it to run when I set the Shift.exe
executable to WXP compatibility mode. I just thought that Steam would
have the games ready for current systems or tell you how to run them.

Officially, it does support Windows 7, meaning it was tested under
Windows 7 prior to release. I have only needed XP compatibility mode
for a *very* occasional title (probably less than 1% of my games
collection).

In a brief surf of the Steam forums, the only folks I saw that needed
XP compatibility mode were folks having trouble on bootcamp on a Mac
(and of course they are pointing fingers at everyone except Apple for
an Apple specific issue).

If XP compat mode works for you then I guess no reason to change, but
I did want to point out that when Steam games do not support modern
operating systems, officially, there is a warning banner that says it
requires XP or whatever.

Actually I use bootcamp quite a lot and have not had any steam issues,
bootcamp is not really different to other windows installs, it comes
down to driver issues if a game fails, and face it most people use apple
notebook configurations, so the chance that the game does not work
properly on a notebook is higher than on a desktop machines due to
various reasons. But that is mostly with all notebooks.

I know, and the guys I saw complaining seemed to be trying to run
things on an iMac (which from a thermal standpoint is not a
particularly smart gaming configuration, Intel has said many times
that Apple doesn't know or care anything about proper heat
dissipation).

And yes, most of the time Windows software should work on bootcamp,
but the problem I see is that when they don't, it's Microsoft's fault
or the game developer's fault in the eyes of the user. It cannot
possibly be the fact that they are running a non-supported, non-tested
configuration, and above all, it cannot possibly be Apple's fault.

I've got a 2.7 ghz core i7 Mac mini here, but I have no desire to run
games on it. In fact I have a hard time finding excuses to use it at
all.

Actually here it is vice versa, I got a PC which I use only for gaming
serious work for me needs a Unix machine, Windows is out of the game
(for many reasons), so I almost work entirely on OSX.

If I did have a specific need for a Unix environment, I would
definately gravitate toward OSX rather than Linux-distro-du-jour.

It really wouldn't bother me at all if OSX became my one and only
music-making platform, but it seems so far from that from where I
stand. So many great synths are still VST/Windows only, and Mac ports
are afterthoughts. Then of course there is the processing
bang-for-buck dilemma with Macs, and oscillators and audio fx eat up
insane amounts of CPU.

May I ask what kind of work you do (and what imposes the Unix
requirement?)

Software development, and literally any software developer I know
prefers Unix/OSX over windows, unless he has to do windows programming.
The reason is, first the excellent unix command line toolchain, and
secondly the windows pessimistic file locking which constantly causes
troubles with your toolchain (aka command line build tools, IDE hangs,
deployment failures etc...). It is also funny if you go to a software
development conference nowadays, the Macs often there are in a serious
majority by now.

Most of the times Windows for software development is used, if you
program for windows with the Microsoft toolchain or if your employer
forces you to use a Windows machine (which is almost ever the case)
