Is the Civ IV version of Colonization the same game as the original Colonization or is it different in some fundamental way?

Unfortunately from what I've heard about the same it's pretty much exactly the same game with better graphics. I haven't played it, but the comments here when it came out was it shared all the problems the original had. Unfortunately I have gotten rid of mine just recently because I disliked it so much, I can't just quickly fire it up to refresh my memory, it was long enough ago that I don't remember what it was that pissed me off so much that I stopped playing it inside a week. I any event, I play freeciv, and I still enjoy that. It's as good as, or better than, the original Colonization (I'd play the original still but it has some graphic glitch that makes it not display properly on my screen). It's still in development, and it still has one or the other fault like very rarely hanging on the AI's turn, or it doesn't center on the current unit at times. Other than that it represents the spirit of the original better than that scripted version for Civ IV. -P.

I'm told the vanilla game is basically the same but there are some mods like of Age of Discovery if you want something a little different.
