Konichiwa!

This was announced a while ago but it's getting ever closer -- less than
a week. If you haven't watched the trailer I recommend it and a demo of
the battles is already available.

Get the Demo from Steam

I will be disappearing from the face of the Earth from March 15th until
the forseeable future. :D

Kinjiro!

Well at least try and come up for air from time to time and let us know
what you make of the game. :)

Whee!

They have not disappointed me. Took most of the night to just go through
the tutorials. Those Japanese ships are crazy!

The interface is smooth and responsive. I can play in 'Ultra' mode
without needing a PC upgrade, and to call it beautiful is an
understatement. A lot of the same old background music from Shogun 1
with better mixing.

My default opening moves don't work so I am back to school in the
campaign mode. No idea yet how to use ninja or geisha in campaign mode.
A more detailed review will follow ... eventually. :)

I was going to buy it at retail until I found out they are still forcing
the Steam ball and chain.

The first Steam game I bought was Empire Total War. The cons of Steam
were finally outweighed by my desire to play that game.

Since then I have acquired half a dozen games that happen to be Steam
titles and have had no issues or problems. It did not cause me to go
blind or anything. YMMV.

Shogun 2 - Total War, however, is the first game I've ever bought that I
cannot pin to my Start menu (XPSP3) for reasons that baffle me. When
installing I unchecked the 'desktop shortcut' option but left the 'pin
to start menu' option selected but it didn't actually do so and no
matter what I try I cannot pin this one game. All my other games (Steam
or otherwise) work. Weird. :/

You might want to try looking in the "steamapps\common" subdirectory of
wherever you installed Steam for the Shogun 2 executable. There will be
something like a "shogun_2_total_war" directory in there and something
like a "Shogun2.exe" will be in that directory. If double clicking on
that executable starts up the game correctly, then drag the icon on to
the start menu to create a shortcut to it.

Make sure it creates a shortcut and doesn't just copy the executable
to your start menu, as that won't work. You might need to right drag
the icon to your desktop and select create shortcut, and then drag the
shortcut to the start menu. I'm not sure how Windows XP handles draging
directly to the start menu.

I should also note that this doesn't work for me with my Steam copy of
Rome: Total War Gold, but it works with every other Steam game I've tried.
When I try it with Rome it complains that it can't find Steam and then
opens the Steam WWW page in my browser. It possible that Shogun 2 also
shares this problem.

You are very clever, Ross.

I checked there and the only thing that looked like a S2TW program was
too small and launching it just launched Steam. I could not pin it
either. But then I tried ...

And this worked. I had never done it that way before. Usually I just
right click on the program and select 'pin to Start menu' but that
option didn't exist for S2TW. However, dragging that file over the word
"Start" opened the menu and I could drop the shortcut and it worked!

Thanks for teaching me new ways to use XP and for solving this mystery.
