MOO2 The biggest fleet

I played hard, huge, 8players and without the patch(because I heard the cost
of "creative" went up). I managed to assembel a fleet of about 60 ships
including 40 Doom stars. Guess what, the Gnolams had a fleet of 138 ships
including 84 doom stars(I was Meklar). Of course I had to fight and see
what happens for the heck of it, and my ships were all destroyed when
they went about 2/3 of the first turn. I had better tech(finished all)
but mattered very little.
And just wondering, has anyone seen anything bigger? Well, this was my
first time playing hard(Actually I won the game by vote since I had way
more population) and playing average, this kind of thing just doesn't
happen because they tend to kill each other very soon.
Anyway, just a thought.

I've hit the max total # a few times in huge games, but I don't recall
an actual number. My general strategy is to hang back and get a big
tech advantage, unfortunately this tends to let your final couple of
opponents get fleets built that are just silly, not to mention fairly
easily decimated even with initiative turned on.

I played a game where it got down to me (humans) and the Psilons. Since the
Psilons had the lion's share of the stars and were peaceful, they left me
alone. I researched and maxed out tech and then built a fleet of about 40
Doomstars. I attacked the Psilons and their fleet had 115 Doomstars, heh
heh. Needless to say, they wiped the floor with me. The damn battle took
about 10 minutes. I think mine were a little better than theirs, but I was
overmatched by numbers. An odd game, to say the least.

I just got finished playing a hard game using a Custom race. I ended up
fighting the Gnolams. I had unfortunately let them build up about 17 star
systems to my 8. I noticed them start taking stars like crazy and found out
they had 100 ships, mostly titans, this has been the largest fleet i've ever
seen, and I only had 10 count them 10! ships to fight with. I had already
claimed orion and all, but it didn't really matter when a force that big comes
at me. The battles took at least 15 minutes. How does one fight a fleet like
this????
I ended up going back a few turns, to before we were at war. I had ALL my
colonies build one titan with stellar converters. I sent a ship to each of
their colonies and took their planets, they had stuipidly left their planets
undefended in lieu of conquering. I lost two planets to the 100+ fleet, but I
won.

IMO there should be a limit of about 30 or 40 ships on fleet sizes, just so you
can have a chance and the battles won't take so long.

I've played two games where one turn of combat lasted about 10 minutes.
While the computer was doing it's turn I went to get something to eat. It
was about 40 doom stars and if i remember correctly, 59 titans + smaller
ships. About 1/3 of the DSs were loaded with stellar convertors and titans
had tractor beams + loads of other guns. Anyway, i was outnumbered and had
about 20 doom stars and titans, but i was technically more superior.
Although i think all races that were still alive had researched all the
available tech. Anyway, i sometimes let the AI handle my combat since it
took so long, but after realizing that it didn't target the stellar
converter DSs, i had to step in and start shooting manually. One of my
doomstars destroyed any ship in the combat, but when computer shoots with
one of his stellar converter ships, he needs at least two shots to destroy
one of mine. So anyway, I won the battle after taking care of the enemy
converters. The other battle similar to this was pretty much the same,
except all tech hasn't been discovered and i'm outnumbered by huge load of
doomstars. Enemy is way behind in tech compared to me, but they beat me
anyway. I hate those huge fleets.

To defeat large fleets: time warp facilitator, stasis fields, heavy
plasma beams, lightning shield, tractor beams, and the Antarean device
that makes damage 1/3 but you can`t have shields. I have often had
fleets with 4-5 Doom stars and conquered enemy fleets with the same
number of doom stars + lots of titans and battleships. You would want to
put your weaponry in several "slots" instead of 1x12 Plasmas, you`d have
maybe 3x4, because if you damage enemy ships so that they are almost
destroyed, they may blow up, selvdestruct or make a run for it. Make the
plasmas the primary weapon of your arsenal unless the enemy has max in
shield tech. Also use structural analizer and the achilles device.

I played a game (huge 8) and eliminated everyone but the klackons. Somewhere
along the line I defeated the guardian, but they sent a colony ship in
right under my fleet and colonized it (I had a non-agression pact). I blew
this off off and concentrated on beating up the other races and building my
fleet. meanwhile, the klackon were building a huge fleet and stationing it
at orion. Sinc ethey were uncreative, they never got titan or doomstar
tech, and made hundreds of battleships, all with cloaking devices. When
I did decide to attack, I couldn't target any of their ships on my turn
(love that cloak), and was completely wiped out in two turns by their
superior numbers and inferior technology.

These days I favor the particle beam, with achilles targ and struct. analyzer.
This gives you a shield piercing, armor ignoring weapon. Asside from that the
stasis field, phasing cloak, teleporter and twf are good. Assault shuttles are
perfect if you have telepathy and good ground combat. Every ship he loses is
one you gain. But mainly the stasis field if the tech is high. That way you
can have a few weapons (or a few ships with BHGs) and 6 stasis fields take
down an army 6 times its size. One trick I like is hitting one ship with BHG
then several with stasis. Then I release ships in stasis just long enough to
hit each in turn with a BHG then bobble them again. This takes a while but it
is worth it when you pull your fleet back to the edge of the map and release
all their ships from stasis at once. And watch an entire fleet get sucked down
the black holes than only the stasis had saved them from so far.

Cloak back. The time is ripe for suicide economic warefare. Send cloaked ships
with the means to wipe out a planet in one decloak. Netronium bombs should do
(on a big ship or at high tech). If you can't face his fleet kill his empire
out from under it, even if he guards one planet you can let the weight of the
ships with no empire backing them kill his money supply, meanwhile sabotage,
sabotage, sabotage.

You could instead just demand the star system from the Klackons. :)
They don't really care how potentially good the planet is, just the size.
Looks to me a little like a bug, so I don't use it much

I had a small fleet of battleships (15-20) equipped with Mauler devices as heavy mounts and they took down a Sakkra battleship fleet of 75 and we one. What happened was that I had also equipped my ships with Transporters. All my ships had to do was drop the front shields of the enemy ships and teleport marines over and they took the ship over. More than 50 ships got taken captive by me. The Sakkra being the race they are, used their high productivity to come back with a fleet of 115 ships! Didn't matter as the same result happened plus I had those 50 captive ships to buffer my originals from fire. My fleet grew bigger. I was like over 50 command points but my economy could take it so I just pressed on. My war with the Sakkra went on like this for a good bit. They'd rebuild a huge fleet and it'd vanish into thin air because I would just capture it. Lols. The Sakkra eventually surrendered their empire of over 25 stars they had to my 10. Mailers and transporters are a good combo

I recall that making HUGE fleets of cheap and tiny fighters was a
viable strategy in MOO1. A decently built-up planet could crank out
five or ten of the things per turn. Individually, they'd only have a
single weapon and an enemy cruiser could swat dozens of them out of
the air with a single attack, but you could amass hundreds - I think
up to 999 - and take out pretty much anything.

They were lousy for defense - you had to amass them into huge fleets
and that usually required you to redirect ships from several planets -
but they were a surprisingly efficient way of attacking. I took down
the Guardian of Orion with such a fleet once.
