It's impossible to run a true control test by including copy protection on one run and not on another, for obvious reasons. As such, it cant be ascertained whether even one of the pirates would actually buy the game if it had perfect copy protection. The real reason that id games might not be selling that well, is that they're not exceptional must haves anymore. Doom 3 and Quake 4 were ok games, but nothing more. It's the perception that a lot of money is lost because of piracy that gets the publishers up in arms, but it might well not be true. There are also a ton of competing options to PC games these days, consoles not least amongst them. That, and the huge increase in the development and complexity of gaming software, has made it that much more difficult for companies to turn a significant profit. As long as games get more exponentially more complicated, and have a shorter and shorter shelf life, the less chance there is of games making their publishers a fortune. Shame really, those Ferraris cost a fortune.
