Unknown and not provable. In order to test your theory you would have to use a control, i.e. a market where there is no piracy to see if your theory is true. In the markets where piracy is not a major issue, like the cartridge based game consols, there were still companies that won and lost. That this type of argument is constantly used for: Nuclear winter, save the rain forest or no new cure for cancer, global warming, ... bothers me. What is wrong with just a moral and principled position like it is wrong to engage in a certain behavior without trying to introduce adverse consequences, like game companies going broke and no more G.I. Joe with the Kung Fu grip? It should be enough to know there is such a thing as intellectual property rights. How about just doing things because they are the right thing to do?
