I'd personally blame it far more on MMOs which take all the time of a
gamer, to the exclusion of all else, therefore turning people who were
consumers of a large variety of games into consumers of only one.

!Bad analogy warning!

It's as if there were a bunch of happy consumers in your neighborhood
going out to eat at least once a week going to a variety of
restaurants, they were having a good time trying new foods, sometimes
they got bad food though, and didn't like it, and just dumped it in
the trash and bought a different dinner, without returning it. Then
along came a guy selling food subscriptions. He said, hey, I've got
this great deal, We'll deliver food to your house every night, and
you'll only pay the same you would for one meal a month from the local
restaurants. A few people said sure, what a deal! They get food
every night now, so they never go out and eat, or if they do they only
do it once every three months instead of once a wek times a week.
They are buying 1/10th of what they were from these local guys with
all the other variety, and they have to throw away the meal they get
from the subscription guy. It started out slow, a lot of people were
thinking eh, what if I get bored with it? But then more and more
people got into it because of what a deal it was and how much the
people already in it were saying how great it was. Then eventually
almost everyone was in on it. In the end there's only 1/10 of the
revenue going toward the restaurants so they reduced costs making
their food bland and the same as the successful subscription, and no
one wanted that since it was the same, and many just went out of
business.
