I must admit that I got into computer gaming because of games like Bc3000ad.
When it was released and it got such a bad review, I didn't bother with it at
all. I was surprised when I got a copy of the game with a magazine that I
subscribe to. I have been playing it for 2 days straight and even left work
early{ claiming I was sick} to play it. It's nice to see that Derek Smart
attempted to fix the game. I cannot start a saved game. Whenever I attempt
to resume a saved game it crashes. Could you hlp me out I am running a 133
through windows I attempted to play the game through DOS but it keeps telling
me that it cannot open some file. Is there something I can do to play saved
games? I got the game with Computer games strategy plus june edition. I look
forward to the release of the sequel.

You mean Publick Occurances?

Yes, but it won't actually be available until March of 2005. And the
magazine is missing every even-numbered page. AND the whole thing is
on newsprint with grainy black and white screenshots. AND the binding
is on the right side of the paper. The damn thing snaps shut without
warning every 5 minutes too, so be careful.
CGS+ is offering to send you some of the missing pages, but first you
have to send _them_ pages. They expect it to take 10 or 11 trades for
you to have enough pages to call it a magazine, and then they will
start working on the July issue, which will be the June issue with one
extra preview(Deer Hunter 2), though the whole thing will now be on
glossy paper with color, though the binding will still be on the wrong
side. Oh yea, and Steve Bauman now claims to have won the Nobel Prize.
Weird.

Anybody know if it'll be included on any UK magazines. I'd like to try
it but I'm loathe to spend 8 hours downloading from the net !

Dunno - there is an agreement not to publish full commercial (or
ex-commercial) games on UK CDs because then people don't buy games -
they spend their limited gaming time playing the freebies.

Derek will probably have to pretend that it is in fact a demo of the
upcoming version. ;)

I tried it, and although the presentation was very good, the in-game
graphics are showing their age. It also has a learning curve that
makes the Himalayas look like a small pimple. Although there is the
argument that complex software means a complex/deep interface, I found
many things very unintuative indeed, and it did put me right off the
game.

I think Derek will have to have a hard think about how to make the
player interact more easily without having to learn the whole of the
giant manual by heart before even starting the game. With the
upcoming graphics engine, the game does show a lot of potential, but I
would have been disappointed if I'd paid money for it.

Thanks for the warning. Most of the computer gamers (100+) that I know are
planning not to buy any of the magazines with BC3K on it.

At least Eric's post had some humor as some redeeming quality. He was
also expressing his opinion that BC3K on the CD is not an interesting
or exciting proposition. As for your response, it was void of any information
or interest that I could detect, except possibly you have something against
people named Eric or you just have something against people that aren't
interested in BC3K? I'm not sure which.

No, because there is a law in the UK against putting complete games on mag
cd-roms. PC Gamer UK was going to carry it until this was discovered. If you
live in the city, you can probably get it from a store that sells European mags
and will find it on one of the French, Italian, Australian or German mags that
are carrying it. There is a list the GNN section of my web site and you can
even find it on Czech, Polish, Israeli and Middle East mags. Yep, it's
available worldwide.

Is there? And how long has this law been in force? I remember the 80's
where every month you could get about 20 free games from magazines. Does
this not count for CD's then?

There is no law against this at all. In the late 80's and early 90s,
magazine competition was so fierce, that games magazines were putting
free games on their coverdiscs. These were ususally 6-12 months old,
but were otherwise full commercial releases.

It became so prevelent that games manufacturers were worrying that
people weren't buying games - they didn't need to because they got so
many free on the cover of magazines. These freebies sucked up all the
free time of players who would otherwise (supposedly) be buying games.

The games publishers got together and strongarmed the magazines into
stopping this practice, and that agreement still stands today. That's
most likely why BC3000 won't be appearing on the front of a UK
magazine.

Well John this is the first (and probably the last) time I have ever
contributed to a BC3K thread, but I'd like to point out that CGS+ is
distributed in the UK by Comag at a quid cheaper than the inferior UK
magazines. So if you want a free copy of BC3K just look around and if
you don't still look around, save a pound and get a better mag.

Cool, thanks for the explanation. Sounds like how the retailers strong arm the
distributors and publishers into paying for shelf space using extortion type
tactics.

They are giving away I-War?
Because BC3K is Starflight with bad graphics and the worst interface I
have ever tried to "play".

I agree. I downloaded it and it hasn't crashed on me yet. I haven't figured all
of it out yet, but part of what is doing that is my ancient P75 which is lagging
me to kingdom comes.

The applications replaced the games that had previously been
appearing. The editorials were a bit of a whitewash - it was the games
companies that were seeing falling sales, not the magazines.

The thing is, it was originally done as an advertising thing, so a
given games company got their name all over a magazine. They all got
together and agreed to stop giving software to the magazines. They
*all* had to agree so that no one got a pecieved marketing advantage
by being able to give away a complete games title in return for the
company name being featured all over a magazine.

I'm a subscriber to CGS+ magazine and I'm glad that BK3K is going to be on the
CD... not because I want BK3K, but because it gives me the choice to. I
really doubt that the amount of space on the CD that BC3K took bumped any
other programs, so I applaud CGS+ for putting this and other things on their
disk. In fact, good for you, Derek Smart for getting BC3K on the CD because I
would never take the time to download a huge file through my phone line,
especially something that has received so much negative press.

I'm waiting for Descent: Freespace to be on the CDs since I won't even
download that through my phone... and that's a worthy game.

To CGS+, please keep loading up your CD's with demos, patches (repeat the
patches over and over), web add-ons, whatever. Part of the reason I subscribe
WITH the CD is for the simplicity of having all the programs archived on the
easy to store CDs... which don't require HD space when archived.

I stopped by this news group to try to decide wether to invest in the
downloading time for the "new", free, release of B3K... This is what I find...

Snippy, flaming, and profane users bullying other users under the guise of
being a newsgroup "information sheriff" (ie: if you're not as informative as
I want you to be then you deserve to be treated like dirt). Now I'm used to
the childish antics usenet users... but... What I find inexcusable is Derek
Smart, the "Designer/Lead Developer" promoting irrational and rude behavior
to others with a comment like:

>>>Couldn't have said it better myself.<<<<

This is Mr. Smart's response to some flamer..?? Maybe a "better" response
would have been: "Gee... It's too bad you aren't going to try a kick-butt,
FREE, game, but hey... It's not for everyone."

Between this message response and the odd, accusatory, "press-release" Mr.
Smart issued in February (and posted on the B3K web site), I get really
turned off to the idea of trying this free game... Mostly because of all the
animosity associated with B3K.

Now, in all probability, I will try the game, so that I can see what all the
fuss is about (and YES, I will have a very open mind). Unfortunately, I'm
plauged by concerns about the kind of reception I might receive from Mr.
Smart if I choose to write candidly about the game (here) after trying it.
Will I be flamed by a group of users? Will they then be egged on by the
game's developer?

Mr. Smart, You state you have been in a long learning process (since 1989)
and have toured the world educating yourself on game design and development.
Perhaps you should invest more in learning about the public relations behind
product release and development.

Now.... Go at it you folks.... Flame away... Make sure you include lots of
profanity, as it tends to clarify your points ;-)

Well... I understand... But as a game BUYER, I appreciate seeing a level of
respect out of the vendors and developers, in terms of usenet responses. When
I see someone ranting, flaming, and spewing nastines... and... they're on the
development team... I tend to steer clear of the product (as I did with Army
Men from 3DO after their odd email interchanges with the usenet community). I
consider the people behind the product to be a good indicator to the level of
service/quality I'll get after the purchase.

You certainly don't have to be a politician... any more than I have to
support your product with my purchase/download. Fortunately, I'm not in your
shoes in terms of trying to sway a (hard nosed and often mean spirited)
public to shell out 50 clams for a game. If I was, I might try more sugar and
less vinegar. But that's just me... brother ;-)

(PS: I definitely DO understand how you'd want to lash out after some of the
goofy emails I've read in the threads here... But who wants to sink to the
level of some knuckle draggin'dork?)

About what ?
I have followed Derek for years now and I don't need to open my mind
anymore to know that I will never support anything from this guy.

When it's said that Derek Smart is a fraud and a jerk, the man is being
attacked. When it's said that BC3K is a piece of shit game, the game
is being attacked. When it's said that no matter how good of a game the
fraud and jerk produces in the future, I will not be interested in his
game. This would be an attack on the man, not his game. I hope you find
this little explanation helpful in trying to following the thread.

Interesting ? Maybe you should read that I do not support the game
"Because of Derek" I do not give a shit about the game since I
returned it the day I found out the first patch needed a patch. Saved
me lots of DL time just getting rid of it.
So to clear it up for you Webboy, It is Derek, not his game, that I
flame.

Hey that's kind of catchy ...don't you think ?

Now that really is a creative flame. I salute you. Looks like a deliberate
troll too...
