Sorry for the meaningless post. My news server seems to have dropped the flight sim group but sometimes I can follow a crossposted link to get it back into the feed. (I dislike Google's interface.) I just purchased MS Flight Sim X Gold and a joystick so I need to join in all the fun in the flight sim group. SP1 makes a HUGE difference on a dual core system! Carry on. :) - Sheldon

For MSFS I recommend alt.games.microsoft.flight-sim This newsgroup is more oriented to combat-type flight simulators on a good day (and politics the rest of the time) (kinda embarassing to say that having just succumbed to the trolling in the "Bitch" thread) You'll love the guys in alt.games.microsoft.flight-sim... there never was a more helpful group of people. As for joysticks, I use an old logitech wingman force for prop syms, and a Thrustmaster SWF setup for Falcon 4.0, Lomac (which I almost never play) and other jet sims. Most folks around here us CH products, though, and seem to love them. I highly recommend their pro pedals (with toe brakes). Also look into a TrackIr. It enables you to shift the view by slight turns of the head. Very intuitive and the most useful accessory since the joystick. good luck... and remember; it's not a game . . . . . It's not a simulation . . . . It's a totally unreasonable addiction! (MSFS is anyway - you'll spend a fortune of addons and love it). I visited the flight sim group yesterday and was surprised to see no MFSX posts at all. :( It was indeed mostly political nonsense posted by people not smart enough to use the political forums where it is actually appropriate. That way people who give a %$@# can go there and read it and people who don't give a %$@# don't have to get any of that manure on them. Why are intelligence and politics mutually exclusive? > (kinda embarassing to say that having just succumbed to the trolling in the > "Bitch" thread) :) > You'll love the guys in alt.games.microsoft.flight-sim... there never was a > more helpful group of people. > > As for joysticks, I use an old logitech wingman force for prop syms, and a > Thrustmaster SWF setup for Falcon 4.0, Lomac (which I almost never play) and > other jet sims. A decade or more ago I had the F18A flight sim for the Mac with a killer joystick. Loved that sim. I've since transitioned to the PC and see that joysticks haven't changed much. The one I bought was the only one available at Best Buy (Logitech Attack3) and it's okay but I woulda liked a hat switch so I'll keep looking. Even this cheapo joystick makes jet landings MUCH easier. I am considering pedals but not just yet. > Also look into a TrackIr. It enables you to shift the view by slight turns > of the head. Track IR tracks the motion of your head... There is a sending and receiving unit that sits on the monitor (actually, you can put it almost anywhere in front or behind and adjust the sofware accordingly) Depending on which unit you get, you either have a small reflective dot that you place on a ball cap or similar, or else a small metallic set of three reflectors. The sending unit sends an infrared signal which bounces off the dots and back to the receiving unit. As you turn your head, the dots shift and the view on your screen shifts (the screen shifts more than your head moves... It's very easy to move your head and keep your eyes on the screen). If you get teh better setup with the three reflectors, as you move forward or back, the view zooms in and out. If you move (not turn) your head to the left, the viewpoint shifts to the left, etc. You can actually look out the window and down at the ground, or look around the pedestal to see the runway better. Again, because you're using your head in teh same movements you would use in real life (just to a lesser degree) it is very, very intuitive. I cannot recommend it strongly enough.
