Microsoft Freelancer?

Hi guys,

I'm wondering if anyone knows how many levels there are in the game? At the
moment, I've finished the plot and am now at level 33. All I seem to do is
fly around and earning money from the repetitive missions. I've got the best
ship in the game - the Titan - and have nearly the best weapons.

Is the game worth playing once you've done the plot? Trading is not
realistic or worthwhile and you can't really act as a pirate or a rogue as
the good guys seem to forget about your rogue status as soon as you take a
trade line or jump hole.

Also, I noticed the weapons upgrades don't seem to do much. It takes me as
long to bust ships using level 9 or 10 lasers as it did with levels 1 or 2.
I just bought a new missle that's supposed to do twice the hull and shield
damage per shot, but it seems to make no difference...

Any comments?

Thanks and cheers, Arminius

I don't believe the levels go any higher than 33 in vanilla FL. Try some of
the mods (there's a bazillion of them). I recommend Tekagis Treasure, but
Crossfire is also pretty good. Both mods add about a 100 new systems, jump
gates, factions, and scores of new ships, equipment and weapons (many of the
ships are from Star Wars, WC, Star Trek, etc. and many are new creations).
The best source for FL stuff in Lancer Reactor. Just follow the link:

My take is, it got really old really fast after I finished the plot. Mods, or
not. But that's just me, ymmv, obviously.

It's been a while, but wasn't there a rock-scissors-paper relationship
between the guns and the shields? If you have the "wrong" type of guns
against the enemies you face, you won't do much damage IIRC, and once you
have the "right" gun it was almost too easy. Or maybe I'm thinking of
another game.

Been a long while for me, too. But that never struck me as all that much of a
problem in Freelancer. Get the best guns you can find, set the speed so you
have maneuverability and whale away .... and run like hell if you're
overmatched ;-) I am pretty sure I always bought my weapons on damage stats,
and firing speed, never on type.

Agreed. There were differences in missles however. One was good for
killing hulls, another good for killing shields, and a third which was
a bit of both. That is, IIRC.

Yup. 3 basic gun- & shield-types. You could just work out what shields are
prevalent in a given sector and kit out to suit... but I preferred to rig
the best of two different gun-types so I was always assured of at least
medium scale damage when the odd "non-conformist" ship scoped in.

The problem with that was the resource drain on re-fitting, and the
fact that you had nowhere to store your de-equipped weapons and had to
buy them again, which was a pain with high end stuff, and once you
equipped any of the unique weapons, that was it.

FL was a tragedy - it could so easily have been THE elite/FFE remake of
the 90s, but they got a few simple things wrong. The factions and stuff
were fun, but the tiny universe and the lack of any sort of stash were
painful.

Umm... no.

You apparentely missed the bit about being able to equip/unequip things
without selling them. If not equipped, it doesn't affect your cargo
capacity. Apparently it's all kept on an invisible u-haul trailer that
follows your ship everywhere..

My current FL saves have something like a dozen unequipped level 10
weapons, plus several more mounted.

I found the universe to be a nice manageable size, given that none of it
was auto-generated "filler". What ruined FL for me was the single type
of generated missions [1] once you finish the plot, and lack of anything
approaching a dynamic economy to keep you on your toes and to allow for
things like taking out a docking ring for an agricultural world to drive
up prices for food in the vicinity...

[1] The total mission variety:

Blow up $X of enemy faction with $Z escort.

 $X is one of:
   * Single ship
     * May be at a secondary waypoint
     * May need to bring ejection pod to base
   * Defense platforms
   * Small station
   * Everything
 $Z is one of:
   * None
   * Arrives with you
   * Arrives a few minutes after you do

Really??? Mind boggles. That is so weird. Admittedly I only played it
for a few intense months before I'd sucked all the replayability out of
it, but I did indeed never discover that. Wow.

So where do they go? I don't mean in suspension-of-disbelief, I mean,
how do you list them? Where do they appear in the game, if not in your
cargo inventory? (Game is not installed at the mo so I can't check
this)

Yes, it really did lack the immersiveness of the Elite/FFE universe.

Oh well - I reckon there is another great Elite-type space exploration
rpg out there. Maybe Elite 4, maybe something else. Give it a decade or
two.

Freelancer didnt have much to offer after main campaign beside of explore
the game, and fog. A lot of easter eggs to be found
around. The missing mother ship thing, and the background stories of some
factions you could get to know more about as you found their home
worlds/bases. A lot of wrecks hidden around with nice weapons, modules you
could fit on your ship.

Also multiplayer had its value for a time, guess not anylonger. I still love
the atmosphere of Freelancer, the comms noise, and the illusion of it was an
alive universe. However, I would wanted the ability to pilot larger ships,
had more dangerous missions to do with these large ships etc. Wouldnt mind
an Freelancer 2, doubt that happens.

As for a new Elite type of game.... EVE-Online is all that and more for me.
I played Elite2 - Frontier in the old days on my Amiga for like houndred of
hours, it was awesome. Got that feeling again when I tried EVE for like 3
years ago, and still plays it.

They just hang around in your equipment list, without the "mounted" flag.

I agree with you about the replayability. The mods let me eke a few more
weeks out of it, but after a while enough's enough. They're basically just
window dressing, a few new ships or extra systems doesn't really change the
game play... and the substance just isn't there. It had (has?) potential,
but I'm not holding my breath over it.

eve online's gameplay had little on what frontier elite was.

eve was like frontier elite but with an aimbot, and playing in god's
eye spectator's view.

a real frontier elite clone would involve flying a ship in first person
view and you learn your real pilot skills and aim.

the sci-fi fans are like sheep. every time someone mentions eve online
at a misc community message board they all flock to it because of
amazing graphics!

come on please. let go of that overrated game.

on a positive side about eve is, it's a nice space themed rpg game.
just that you guys need to stop calling it a mother of all space sims.

I guess that bottom down to each individual feel and taste. For me is EVE
all I wanted from Elite and more.

If that is all you want Elite to be then Freelancer does that better. Elite
was so much more than just a FPS game.

Actually, those I play with doesnt play EVE because of the graphics, but
because of the game itself and the community around it.

Overrated? Have you eve tried it at all?

No one called it the mother of all space sims. And to correct you, call any
sci-fi/space related game for sim is bollocks, unless you want to run some
NASA shuttle sim of sorts. EVE is a mmorpg in space setttings.

Nice to see this Freelancer thread.

I've read that DigitalAnvil was folded by Microsoft and the individuals
who worked on the games were reassigned.

There is a lot of good replay value in the game if you like mods... many
of the mods are much more than just different ships and there are some
folks in the Freelancer community who are working on building lots more
stuff, including entirely new missions and enhanced gameplay.

You might want to chack out The Lancer's Reactor which can be found at
http://www.lancersreactor.com - they currently have server issues but
the site will be back up & fully functional soon - so they say.

There are a lot of really great single & multiplayer mods for the game
as well as a nifty "Mod Manager" which loads the mods into your game for
you. Also there are working "unofficial" patches which resolve every
game play issue - both sigle player or multiplayer. There's also a
nested series of online forums including some with tutorials for mods -
both gameplay and textures or to create new ships and planets and
systems.

... as far as what to do after you win the missions...

OK, you max out at level 38 and if you play to max your funds you should
have several millions of $ or whatever when the President gives you that
medal. The best way to make money is without a doubt to become a
criminal but you have to watch out who you make enemies with or you
won't be able to land anywhere to sell your ill gotten goodies. There
are also lots and lots of goodies waiting to be found in Freelancer...
many level 10 "SuperGuns" and missiles. There are hidden jump holes all
over so you can avaoid the cops & other baddies.

Of course, in single player you can "mod" your game so you start out
with a virtually invulnerable ship & weapon systems that will blast
battleships out of space... then play through the game missions and
every time Juni tells you to go and get a job, run illegal artifacts or
dope instead & blast away any cops or naval forces that try and stop
you. (Do this once the Liberty Navy decides that you are an "Enemy of
the State" and puts that bounty on your head.

Hint: in gameplay you can make nifty "finds" of hidden jumpholes and
wrecked ships to plunder by checking your friend or foe tactical nav map
for patrol routes.

Perro

BTW... excess guns and weapons etc are stored in your secret
multidimensional weapons storage hold. Don't sell them until or unless
you need the money to advance levels during gameplay.

It's been a long time since I played Freelancer. As I recall, once I
went against the aliens over and over I ended up with high powered
alien weapons that required no power and the game became a cake walk.

It was fun blowing everything up that was previously hard, but then it
just got boring.

Great game, though. Wish they would come out with an updated version.
