Series is dead and gone. I doubt there will be any more movies made either.
But,never say never.

That's depressing. The series was fantastic, I was hoping that he made the
movie to hopefully rekindle peoples appeties for it.

I didn't. River is never going to die. At least not permanently. It'd
be like killing Buffy.

In a way, I'm with you. I very much enjoyed the show and was sad that it
ended so soon. Especially with the lingering "unfinished business"
episode that closed the series where that bounty hunter drifted away
into space saying, "Well, here I am ..."

In another way, I'm glad it stopped before it became a soap opera like
TNG and all the other 3000+ episode milk-the-hell-out-of-the-franchise
shows. Even the funniest joke loses its lustre after hearing it 300
times. Best to stop while the quality is still there.

Yeah. I have a script pitch in my head. It's an action movie where you have
basically "Stars" and an unknown, a "Red Shirt," and in every scene, star after
star gets killed until you have no idea who's going to die.

Cruise dies, Van Damme dies, Stallone dies, on and on it goes.

In the last scene, the red shirt is accompanied by another comparitive unknown,
and then the original red shirt gets it because it turns out he's now the Star.

Working title: "Murdering the Star System," a comedy.

Um, hasn't Buffy died at least twice in her series?

The parallel between River and Buffy doesn't fit though - Buffy is the
core of her show, River is a supporting cast member.

Buffy had to be brought back for the show to continue, River did not
have to survive the movie since there isn't likely to be any more
Firefly in any form, and he'd already killed two of the cast off.

It could easily have ended up with Mal sending out the wave, then making
it back to the others just in time for the Reavers to break in and kill
them all.

Be a downer for sure, but when the writer/director *KNOWS* there isn't
going to be any more there's no _need_ to keep the cast alive.

You mean like the end of Angel [grin]?

Buffy had a good ending, or at least one that fit the series. Angel's was
kind of a let down. Then again, I never forgave him for what he did to
Fred, so that could be it [grin].

For other Whedon fans, he was writing the Astonishing X-Men comic for a
while (he might still be doing it, but they messed around with their books
for a while and so he might be gone). Basically, it was a continuation of
Angel with X-Men characters.

I saw some of it at friends places, but I haven't seen the ending of
Angel or Buffy - heck i'd only seen up to part way through the 6th
season and i didn't think i'd seen any (thought Once More With Feeling
was a 5th season thing.)

Hmm, dunno if i'd get into that at all.

On the other hand a major supporting cast member (Buffy's Mother) did
die permanently - and I'd put River and her on about the same level of
cast importance.

Heck they could lose the Shepherd, Simon and River and still have a show
since the _crew_ would all still be there.

You can't blame Joss for the end of Angel. He had all of these
wonderful intricate story arcs going & then the network told him,
"Uhhh? Joss? We're cancelling your show in three weeks. Deal with it."

He then had to race to get every storyline tied up quick and dirty. He
had to cram half a season into just a couple episodes. No wonder it
looked like ass. The network set forth an impossible task.

When the show originally aired it must have gotten near-zero
publicity. I never knew the show existed until SciFi aired the reruns
gearing up for the film release.

Agreed...how many times do the friggin' holodecks have to malfunction
and kill 30 people before Starflleet outlaws the technology? Oh,

If you can guarantee that death order then I'm sure there'll be lots
of people who'd pay to see this movie.

I saw the movie and then he was killed! Hummm?

A quick search finds: "Series creator Joss Whedon has been given notice
that the remaining eight episodes of the show will be the last
produced".

But eight or three, the last series had 'please kill me' written all
over it.

I've always wondered about the exploding consoles every time they get in
a fight.

And just how many times did the "starboard power coupling" go kablooie?

You'd think they'd get some new designers after a few decades of that,
but nooo, they keep on hiring the same "exploding workstations are fun!"
contractors.

Bring back Enterprise I say. The other series got too comfortable in the
Trekkieverse whereas all those things the writers of the later series
depended on hadn't happened yet and the crew were free to interfere with
other races and make all the cock-ups you might expect. I think it made for
much better storylines.

There's another example of a TV series that was given very short
notice of cancellation & all the storylines had to be wrapped up
super-quick.

What's sad is that I feel that Enterprise really started to find its
groove right before it got cancelled. They could have done so much
more with the series.

I agree. I'm typically a non-TV watcher except as very late night
brainless material when I'm too tired to use the computer. Every week I
look at the new TV guide and every week I put it back down and shake my
head. I'm not a Buffy nor Angel fan (not seen either of these except
when clicking along the channels) so this was my first experience of a
Joss script.

One night while watching a Simpsons re-run there was a commercial
announcing the new Firefly series and it looked interesting, a bit
darker than the usual fare, so I made a point of catching episodes 3 and
4 (dunno why they didn't start with #1) and it was good. My wife got all
excited because I finally found a show worth watching.

Then the network canceled it.

After eight months of asking my local DVD store to order it in I finally
gave up and ... uh ... obtained the series else wise. (Nothing to see
here, move along, move along ...) My wife later found the DVD and it
became a birthday gift.

I couldn't believe the network wouldn't try more than two episodes, that
it was so hard to obtain legitimately, and almost nobody knows about it.
Even diehard Buffy fans I know knew nothing about it. It's like some
sort of Alliance conspiracy. ;)

I honestly don't get it ... but I'm glad I've seen it.

I didn't mind the rush job. What I minded was the ending of "Well, we're
all going to go down fighting." I think he was trying to make a point, but
when he tries to make a point he loses sight of "entertainment" [grin].

I didn't like Enterprise, partly because it didn't seem to fit with the
other series and later partly because in order to build tension they added
that whole "time travel" crap so that we wouldn't know how it would end.

Prequels are VERY hard to do, and they weren't up to the task.

The way I understand it the time travel crap was dropped in after the
wrod came down that the series was not going to be back next season so
the time travel thing was a plot device so they could work in their
favorite plotlines they had planed for later seasons.

They made a lot of compromises and did some outlandish so they could
try to work in everything they wanted in the time allowed. It sucked.

If they'd had the writers they ended the series with instead of the
lackluster team they start the series with they may have been off to a
more solid start. The first couple seasons drove off a lot of people
with the high suck factor of it all.

>Prequels are VERY hard to do, and they weren't up to the task.

No, they weren't and they can't blame it on the material or setting,
either. They had a rich fabric of raw material to draw from and they
coudl have really made something special that could have re-ignited
the Star Trek franchise. Instead we got poo. On a stick.

Heh, funny. You know Star Trek was pitched that way as well?

I thought it came in at the end of the second season. I never watched the
show much, but I did catch one of the season finales that introduced it, and
it really did strike me as being introduced to add some suspense into the
show. But since I didn't watch it, I can't really say.

And I probably wouldn't have watched IT either if that was all I knew about
it [grin].

I probably need to watch it again but from memory I thought it was added for
suspense AND to show the history of the reason for the prime directive.

What I liked about Enterprise was their attempt to show where all those
Federation rules we've accepted since we were kids originated and why. I
liked that the characters weren't the perfect Picard types. I liked that
they didnt try to say 'and then the Vulcans found us and everybody lived
happily ever after'. The tension with the (surpisingly less than perfect)
Vulcans was a great. The cock-ups were great. The 'racism' against all
these new species now coming to Earth was believable. The somewhat reckless
actions of the earthmen, their desires for revenge, their thirst for
pioneering exploration, their disregard for the Vulcans rules etc all showed
a more believable (for me) aspect to the goody-goody folk of Earth that
supposedly followed. They could have done a lot more with the show. It
improved every season.

I heard it pitched as "Joss Whedon does SF. With spaceships." That worked
quite well with me.
