But since I didn't watch it, I can't really say. I probably need to watch it again but from memory I thought it was added for suspense AND to show the history of the reason for the prime directive. What I liked about Enterprise was their attempt to show where all those Federation rules we've accepted since we were kids originated and why. I liked that the characters weren't the perfect Picard types. I liked that they didnt try to say 'and then the Vulcans found us and everybody lived happily ever after'. The tension with the (surpisingly less than perfect) Vulcans was a great. The cock-ups were great. The 'racism' against all these new species now coming to Earth was believable. The somewhat reckless actions of the earthmen, their desires for revenge, their thirst for pioneering exploration, their disregard for the Vulcans rules etc all showed a more believable (for me) aspect to the goody-goody folk of Earth that supposedly followed. They could have done a lot more with the show. It improved every season.
