X3: The UFOs are back

I was flying around in the southern part of Argon space, SE of Argon prime
when I heard this weird noise just as I went through a gate. When I came out
the other side I saw this weird icon for it. I targetted it and lo and behold
it was the saucer! By the time I managed to get these two shots it had already
crossed the sector and was about to leave that far gate!

At one point I think it was doing nearly 500 so there was no way I could keep
up with it.

Is X3 any good?

I played X1 Gold, but it got boring after a while. As this was the first
game that played like Elite I picked it up.

I've since then realised since playing RPG's such as Betrayal at Krondor and
space sims like Freelancer, that the best type of game to go for today is
one with the best of both worlds. In other words one with a diverse open
universe that doesn't stop you exploring whilst at the same time has a
strong story that you can follow such that you feel immersed in the game and
feel part of it and get a greater feel for the character you are playing and
those you interact with.

Is X3 any good?

Thanx.

I'm really enjoying it. I think having a break for several years has helped
with that because at it's core it is exactly the same game, premise wise, with
its predecessors. This time around though the graphics are just gorgeous. I
have few minor niggles with it and there are still some bugs to be ironed out
but thankfully no show stoppers that I have come across. One of my biggest
niggles is the music. Some of the tracks are really well done, almost
haunting. But most of them are from the original game. After all this time you
would have thought they would have completely redone the music but not so.

>I played X1 Gold, but it got boring after a while. As this was the first

I don't know what you found boring about the first one but chances are you
won't like this latest incarnation if that's the case. Basically, like Elite
and Frontier you have to make money, and you have various means to do this.
Piracy, trading, scavenging, running errands/missions, mining and running your
own factories. More of the same but it looks a hell of a lot better. It really
does have the best graphics IMHO of any other space sim out there. Egosoft
have made some claims about what the new game can do and most I think are on
the money but there are some that just don't gel. For instance, a while back I
said I would avoid this game as I knew that contrary to what Egosoft were
saying about them taking advantage of the vertical axis in system layouts, my
fear was that despite the great graphics each system would be a little flat
plane with the stations dotted around it and some far off planet that takes
ages of real time SETA travel to reach. Mostly this is true although now some
stations are more above and below the ecliptic plane than before but its still
nothing to crow about. And the planets are now incredibly detailed with
landmasses are weather going past but they are still just eye candy. They are
now just closer and better looking. Despite all this I stil find it more fun
to play than either of the first 3 games.

Freenlancer has nothing on this game.

I liked space games, but I'm not sure what to make of X3. The info on
their web site shows a lot of the games graphics, but not much about
gameplay. (and the video told me NOTHING)
So far, my favorite space game was Freelancer and X3 has some pretty
high competition to live up to.

First of all, is your ship controlled from an invisible cockpit, or do
you use an arcade type chase view? Or better yet, does it have a real
cockpit view?

Is it joystick control only, or can you use a mouse? If you can use a
mouse, is the vertical axis reversable?

I assume you can buy different ships as the game goes on. Can you own
more than 1 ship at a time?

How's the sense of scale? One of the few flaws in FL was that
everything seemed too small. (the stations, the planets, and the solar
systems)

What happens when you dock at at a station? Just a trading screen, or
something a bit more elaborate like in FL?
How is trading in X3?
One of the things that I didn't like about FL is that once you found
one of the REALLY high paying trade routes you could just repeat it
over and over till you got rich. You'd think after a few dozen runs
supply and demand would change.

Is it all scripted missions, or can you just fly around and explore if
you want?

While Freelancer was my favorite, I've also played and liked EVE
online, Homeworld, and the first Independance War. (didn't like the
2nd one) Feel free to compare X3 game features to any of them. :)

IMHO it is a much better game than Freelancer.

You are viewing the world from your cockpit but there isn't a virtual cockpit
unfortunately. You can view the craft from almost any angle from outside the
ship if you wish and fly it that way as well.

>Is it joystick control only, or can you use a mouse? If you can use a
>mouse, is the vertical axis reversable?

Mouse or joystick. Don't remember a reverse control but default is down to
pull up.

>I assume you can buy different ships as the game goes on. Can you own
>more than 1 ship at a time?

You can own as many as you can afford I guess. But considering some of the
larger capital ships can cost up to 100 million that will be a ways of unless
you cheat.

>How's the sense of scale? One of the few flaws in FL was that
>everything seemed too small. (the stations, the planets, and the solar
>systems)

You can't actually visit the planets but they do look huge, as if you were in
low orbit. Other space ships and stations are huge. Factory complexes are even
bigger.

>What happens when you dock at at a station? Just a trading screen, or
>something a bit more elaborate like in FL?

They have removed internal docking in stations, except for the trading
stations. Each station will have a docking pylon to which 5 or 6 ships are
clamped. In game the reason for this was station owners were tired of having
internal structures repaired because of lousy pilots. I suspect the real
explanation for this may be a for gameplay issues, although I can't think of
one at the moment.

>How is trading in X3?

Same as in X2 really.

>One of the things that I didn't like about FL is that once you found
>one of the REALLY high paying trade routes you could just repeat it
>over and over till you got rich. You'd think after a few dozen runs
>supply and demand would change.

The economy goes up and down very fast so you will have to change your routes
every so often or you make next to no money. For instance I bought a large
freighter that can hold 9000 units of cargo. Different containers are
different sizes so the size of the goods affect how much you can carry. I went
to a station selling energy crystals and pretty much bought them out. The
price went from 12 credits to 17 straight away. Similarly when you go to sell
them the price will be high till you dump everything on them and then the
price normalises.

>Is it all scripted missions, or can you just fly around and explore if
>you want?

You don't even have to follow the plot if you want but they are scripted up to
a point. When you start the game you have six choices. The first three have
the main plot and are marked Easy, Normal and Hard. The difference being start
money and equipment. The last 3 choices are the same but no plot to follow.
But you can completely ignore the plot if you wish after the first 2 missions.

>While Freelancer was my favorite, I've also played and liked EVE

Many comparisons really. The seem to have stolen some ideas interface wise
from Eve. The trading is much better than Freelancer although I suppose is not
as good as Eve as it is player driven being a MMORPG. Not as combat oriented
as Homeworld although you can play it like that if you wish. I-War wasn't
really freeform without mods so is difficult to compare really. I-War 2 is a
big favourite of mine but X3 is hands down better looking than any that you
mentioned except maybe Eve. But the flight model in I-War elevates it to a
special place for me not really comparable to anything except Frontier.

I'm seriously toying with ordering X3 from GG today (yes, resistance appears
to be futile). Given that I've played all its predecessors, will I really
be getting enough bang for my c $47 bucks (including S&H and sales tax)? In
your opinion, how much "new game" does X3 deliver?

Not sure really as I didn't really play X2 that much but played the hell out
of X and X-Tension. Trading as you now it is still there. The sectors are
still there. The biggest difference has to be the graphics and to be honest it
has to be seen to be believed. The difference between it and X2 is huge. The
flight model is somewhere between X2 and I-War I suppose. Weapons are much
more than glowing blobs of energy and there are actually beam weapons as well.
Not sure if X2 had those. A demo should be released somewhere around mid
November which is when patch 1.3 is supposed to be released. I suppose the
best question would be "Did you enjoy X2 and could you see yourself playing it
again?" If so you will love X3. If you found it tedious I suspect you will
feel the same about X3.

I played X2 intently for a couple of weeks.....then I simply got bored with
it and stopped completely. I captured ships for financing (and freighters),
built up a pretty good economy (with several stations) and had a top-line
heavy fighter when I quit. It struck me as being very, very similar to X2,
with additional (very expensive) cap ships that I could buy. Just couldn't
stick with it long enough to earn the enormous amounts of money necessary to
buy these ships. As for the X2 plot, I did the first couple of missions (to
get a ship to sell for initial money) and that was it. I'll probably buy X3
because, after all, it's a space sim...and buying every space sim that
released these days is not going to be a financial burden for anybody. :) I
think I'll wait for the domestic CD version, rather than buy the DVD export
version.

Why not?

Isn't that at odds with what you just said? You don't seem to have a
very high opinion of X2, yet you are raving about X3... and then you
say it's like X2, with better graphics?

I'm confused. X2 was sull as dishwater, in my opinion. I don't need a
game that simulates real life in an alternate univers. I'm looking for
an entertaining adventure. That's something that has been sorely
lacking in these space games, since Freelancer. And even Freelancer
wasn't "all that" compared to Privateer.

Had other things to play at the time plus I suppose I had just finished
playing X-Tension to death can couldn't be bothered to start over.

Not really as I have explained above.

Since you are confused as you stated below I will explain, and I'll use small
words if that helps. I don't have much of an opinion of X2 at all really as I
"didn't really play it taht much". Perhaps you missed that bit. My point was
that since it has been years since I played an X game, the last one being
X-Tension it was like coming to it fresh all over again and despite the bugs I
am really enjoying X3. Yes it has better graphics of course but if you follow
the forums there are some very talented script writers that are either porting
over old X2 scripts or crafting brand new ones adding more and more things to
do.

We know.

I think a lot of people have those old tinted glasses on with respected to
Privateer. Freelancer was so so but it locked you down to what you could and
couldn't do depending on how far through the plot you were. There was very
little you could do in the game. X3 is head and shoulders above Freelancer in
almost every area except maybe performance, at least on some systems, and 1.3
patch coming "real soon" is supposed to address that.
