I've been thinking of getting a new RTS game. The last few days I've been playing the demo of Homeworld 2. I liked the original HW and the new one looks like it's got some cool new features. Nicer graphics, upgradable ships, the ability to hyperspace around the map. I've also tried the demo of Nexus. It looked really nice and sounds like it might have some neat features, (upgradable ships) but I didn't have the slightest clue what I was doing in the demo. (I've played a lot of RTS games) I was wondering if anyone has any comment on these 2 games. Is Nexus any easier to learn if you start from the beginning? How's the story in HW2? I've also noticed a couple of glitches in the HW2 demo. Sometimes if you tell your ships to stay docked in either the mothership or a carrier they autolaunch anyways. Is this bug in the full game as well? Also, since carriers don't have as many module or production slots, you end up fitting them differently. Is there any way to name them differently so you can tell them apart? Remove nospam_ to reply by email Jeff H........ Lies, All lies. Don't believe a word Difool/sayNO/steamKiller says. Seems the decision's been taken out of my hands. Homeworld 2's been discontinued and I can't find it in stock anywhere. The ironic thing is that you can still buy the oringal Homeworld and Cataclism as "classic editions" :( Remove nospam_ to reply by email Jeff H........ Lies, All lies. I seen copies at all the EB's that I've been to in Australia (Perth for me, but if we have em then the rest of Australia does too). Homeworld 2 is not a bore fest, Kate was a bit harsh I think. It follows the same tradition of Homeworld and I enjoyed it. It perhaps wasn't as good... I'm not sure why, I think it was primarily that you didn't get time at the end of the map to build your army etc etc, it just auto finishes it for you now. I'm glad I own all the Relic Homeworlds, we need to encourage people to make more space based RTS's. As for Nexus, I enjoyed it very much as well. Its not really an RTS, more like part RPG in that you have to develop your ships, if you don't you die big time in the later missions. The problem here is that if your not overly great with these kind of games you can get overwhelmed, it requires a great deal of micromanagement. You only have a few ships in your fleet so you wouldn't think this is an issue but believe me its a tough job managing that fleet. If you want a true sense of massive ships pounding at each other, this is a game like no either. Its awesome just to sit and watch these mammoth ships hurtling rail slugs and energy shells at each other. I'd go for but, even if you try to get Homeworld 2 online from relic.com. Ceo-

Last time I noticed it on a shelf it was still a full price game. As for Nexus, I reinstalled the demo last night to give it another look. Went through the readme and made a bunch of notes on how to play then fired up the demo. Eventually I managed to get a battle started, but then I was totally lost. I managed to get all my ships attacking one of the enemy ships, but didn't manage to kill it in the hour that I let the battle go on. Sometimes it's sheilds would drop, then recharge before I really hurt it's hull. I also got the sense that the ships weren't really maneuvering, but just sort of tumbling randomly while they fired. That could have been due to the camera controls which I still don't get. After an hour of watching the battle the final score was no ships destroyed on either side and I was totally bored. I also found hte demo to be very dark. I suppose it's more realistic that way, but what's the point of having nice detailed ship models if you can't see them? I've played other space games, (Homeworld, Hegemonia, EVE online) and Nexus is the only one that looked nice but couldn't hold my interest long enough for me to figure out. Of course the others only took me 5 or 10 minutes to figure out the basic movement/firing controls. I guess I'll pass on Nexus. As for buying Homeworld2 online, that's not really an option. When you get something shipped to Canada you pay huge brokerage fees to the courier. Last time I bought a program it cost me $30CDN PLUS the shipping fee. (this was just from UPS for shipping. The cost of the program was billed seperatly) Since UPS is the only shipping option most US companies will use I'd end up paying more for HW2 now that it was selling for when it first came out. I'll just have to wait till I can find one in stock somewhere or find a used copy localy. :( Remove nospam_ to reply by email Jeff H........ Lies, All lies. They show several copies available -- 2 of them are in Canada, so no fees for customs brokerage. (Shipping rates for Canada were listed at US$4.00 and US$5.50 for delivery in Canada). Bret

The walkthrough for the old demo [when it was IG3] went like this: gang up on an enemy ship by using shield-draining weapons, then switch to missiles once its shields are depleted. You can also send in bombers, but they're easily mopped up by Phalanx turrets, so those need to be taken out first if you want your bombers to stay intact. The subsystem list on top of the screen lets you choose which devices you want your ships to attack. // Xan, Ph.D. // I worship His Shadow.
