Thanx Lem -
Actually I've been lurking here for over a decade...
No really! I'm completely serious! If you do the math on the numbers that you can pick
up in the current crop of so-called space sims these days - without fail, nearly every
game - 3D. 2D. it doesn't matter - The physics seem to always equate to very nearly always
the same empirical results:
================
Your average 'SHIP' cruises along in the game universe at a max speed (why is there a max
speed? Well, that's obvious!) of between 30-100 m/s In other words - 35 - 110
MILES/HOUR. Some games let you boost speed up into the 300's m/s but really - So the fuck
what? My VW can cruise faster than some silly starship....
Given the very small nature of "USEFUL Acreage" in your typical game - (despite the fraud
tactic of being able to fly forever in a single direction in some games... If there aint
nothing out there and it doesn't get you anywhere - There's no point!!) - Again, your
typical empty Walmart parking lot is usually bigger than any game map. All you need to do
to check my math is drive across one in my VW!!!
- In fact, I'll go so far and actually make the claim that nearly ALL current Game maps
- no matter WHAT game you choose - the USEFUL AREA is no larger than a typical elementary
school playground....
I find it rather ironic that I first learned the speed of light 186,000 miles/Sec ON just
such a playground...
Your typical average elementary school student is usually quite capable of tossing a rock
all the way across the playground... A good rock thrower can usually keep a rock in the
air what? - 5-8 seconds?
Check it out in YOUR favorite game - how long do those bullets last? How long does it
take to cross the (playgr^H^H^H^H^H^H) game map?
Yeah..... You've probably figured out by now, that nearly EVERY space sim that currently
exists - ISN'T a space sim at all....
A little presto chango with the graphics, Add in Gravity and Yeah, it's a bunch of
children throwing rocks and bottles on a playground....
Oops... I shouldn't have told you that...
