Risen 3 Goes Back to Piranha Bytes' Roots

German developer Piranha Bytes says they are going back to their roots with
Risen 3: Titan Lords, their RPG sequel that's due on August 15th, saying
this includes many elements they are known for from previous Risen and
Gothic games. They offer a new Back to The Roots trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYvXyKUx8y4
to support this, which they describe like so: "The diverse landscapes are
handcrafted and full of life, providing the player with the same authentic,
classic experience that epitomized the Gothic series as well as the original
Risen. In their "Back to the Roots" video feature, Piranha Bytes and Deep
Silver take the player to the various locations of Risen 3: Titan Lords and
show how favourite elements of the previous Piranha Bytes games are coming
back."

Looks really interesting. I just preordered it, because I am a huge fan
of PB, I played every Gothic made by them and Risen 1.

Hmm... I hope this doesn't go too far. Bringing back the crappy UI of
the original Gothic wouldn't be good.

The principle problem for me with Risen 1 & 2 - & to some extent with Gothic
3 -
was the way large numbers of Quests were thrown at me with out
clearly being shown as to which was the central quest ones , which optional
side ones,
& which semi optional but necessary to build up the character.

I last played Risen 2 stuck at a dock with the clear next main quest step to
leave on the ship.
But Hero had collected so many quests I couldn't work out which to do .
Bored with confusion I haven't played it since.

I thought Risen 1 OK - more adventure than RPG - but clearly a continuing of
the Gothic games.
Gothic 4 Arcania is a dull childish linier mess with bad looks.
I'll admit a soft spot for its standalone expansion Arcania : Fall of
Setarrif
looks good & is fun to poke around its corners & Monsters .

Mercifully there is no sign of an Arcania: Gothic 5.

Don't forget the very last Gothic game - Gothic III Forsaken Gods (with the
final community Patch 2v1)
Its more Gothic 3 & the community patch has it looking fine.

The older right holder JoWood is no more, and the rights to the Gothic
name went back to Piranha Bytes.

First reviews are on the positive side - Strategy Informer gave it 8/10
("Despite still having a few issues, Risen 3: Titan Lords is a vast
improvement on Risen 2.") Good to know.

PC Gamer gave it an 83/100 ("Combat quibbles and muddy graphics do
little to spoil the fun of this enjoyable RPG.")

And RPS has some game diary thing going here:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/08/12/risen-3-diary/

Someone posted that you can get this on gamefly.com for 20% off using
code AUG20OFF but I haven't confirmed it yet. That would make the price
come down from $50 to $40 US dollars. But I'm a very patient gamer, I'll
just wait for the inevitable sale in a few months time.

The reviews are mixed so far, some good some really negative. Turns out
to be an average game. Either way I will have a look at it and see if I
like it.

Risen 3: Titan Lords is just out.
Reviews not looking good
http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/risen-3-titan-lords

Sounds like more of Risen 1 & 2 . User reviews very poor.
Pirates have it down to around 4 GB or less.
which doesn't suggest good graphics.
Probably not for me . I've not finished ether 1 or 2 yet.

I'm getting very tempted to Divinity Original Sin
though I don't particularly like that sort of RPG design.
But I would like something different and Risen 3 is clearly not it.

Ok I am 77 minutes into the game and I like it, but I can understand
some of the low scores it is getting.
Plus side, it seems to be a good RPG experience (I am still at the start
after 77 minutes, but so far it was a blast although the combat is
really not beginner friendly)

Downside: Bulky animations, Graphics are really tailored to the last gen
consoles not the PC and the combat could be better, although it is
managable.

Lets see how it turns out in the long run, I definitely will play it
since it feels like a typical Piranha Bytes game which is not a bad
thing per se.

Actually it is not as bad as some of the reviewers tend to make it.
I am past the beginners mission, and I like it.

Well the graphics are definitely last gen consoles, but if you did not
like Risen 1 or 2 then stay away from it. I personally dont mind, and
there is a good game hidden behinde the mediocre graphics and somewhat
not beginner friendly combat system.

D:OS is definitely an excellent choice if you have a craving for a good
RPG experience.

Ok I am 14 hours into the game and have joined my fraction. So far I
really like it. It is however the typical Piranha Bytes game (if you
played one of the Gothics and Risen 1 you will know what I am talking
about) It again is joining one of the fractions in the game working your
rank up and then go for the main mission.

The biggest problem in the beginning was the timed fighting system,
which now that I am accustomed to is actually quite good. The only
problem with the fighting system is the camera which stays at the same
place even if the enemies and your character move around. I am playing
with a controller so I can adjust the cameras easily with my other
stick. Not sure if the same problem also exists with mouse control where
you dont have that easy camera control (one of the reasons why I play
third person games always with a controller)

The fights are quite easy btw. because your henchmen are quite powerful.

Also the graphics are not as bad as my initial impressions were,
definitely above last console generation, but not up to modern standards.

This is definitely not a classic but a very good action RPG if you get a
hang of the fighting system, although due to the strong henchmen a
little bit on the easy side. If you liked the previous Piranha Bytes
games you definitely will like this one as well, if not then stay away
from this one as well.

Ok 32 hours into the game, now it is getting from good to mediocre. The
main problem is the enemy AI, you can beat pretty much every enemy once
you have magic, by firing a spell evasion firing a spell and rince and
repeat. The strong side of this game is exploration but unless you
limit yourself to melee combat then the fights are really not very
strategical. Well it is good enough that I probably will finish it but
the enemy AI and fighting balance is one area where PB has to work on.

40 hours into the game, I am in the last chapter, the fights now have
turned to a series of console like
bossfights (i think it is three of them in the last chapter).
The good side is that the day 0 dlc the fog island was one of the best
parts of the game (which I have finished upfront before going into the
last chapter).

I would say so far not a classic, but a solid 70+% title which is good
enough for me.

Ok the last chapter is not a series of boss fights, like I thought, but
it is a boss fight
and then another island with a boss fight at the end of the island as it
seems. So far I like the athmosphere of the last island it is definitely
among the best in the game. The boss fight at the beginning of the
chapter however was hard. Not in a sense that you could die easily
(close to impossible), but in a sense that it was hard to beat, took me
half an hour to beat it and I was constantly cursing my controller. It
probably would have been easier to beat with a mouse.

Would be a very strange day & game that I started & finished

Typically I lose interest & give up at around 30% .

Well this one sucked particularily, they made the ending a 20 seconds
in game cutszene. They simply were to lazy to give the game a decent
ending but instead went for the bare minimum of what had to be done to
wrap the game up. After the 20 seconds cutszene the credits roll in and
thats it.
