IMO THIEF 2014 is bland & disappointing.
Basically poor .
We can only go where the game allows us to.
There's no 'where & how shall I do this, go there'---
- its search to find where the game will let me go & do.

The Garret voice is HORRID a USA style any-one-of-million TV series thirty
something characterless Hunk
& he has to chase around after a Bossy Girl of the same samey style.
Is fundamentally almost exactly the same as Tomb Raider 2013 , Splinter Cell
Blacklist etc.

Better play Dishonored or Thief 3: Dark Shadows.

I would call it mediocre - which is quite horrible for something like
Thief. Got Thief 1-3 from Gog (no idea where my DVDs/CDs got to) and am
enjoying Thief: Gold at the moment, while Thief (4, whatever) is waiting
for me to get any motivation to play it further. Looks nice, though, but
honestly I think about re-installed Dishonored again *g*

What *I* find incredibly disappointing are these cynical negative kneejerk
posts after playing little of the game. I've put about 12hrs into it so far
(on Master diff, with a couple of the helps turned off), and I'm really
enjoying it. The atmosphere is fantastic, the thieving is great, the loot
is plentiful, and no bugs or crashes so far on the pc version. You can
replay missions if you forgot to buy a tool, there are lots of ability
upgrade options (which you can choose to ignore), and there are many ways to
make the game more difficult, should you wish. It has a nice autosave
system, where when you enter a closet to hide, it saves, as well as
quicksaves and save anywhere option. This is a great game, people, enjoy
it!

Well..... maybe your kind words about the game will justify a
bargain-bin pickup next Christmas.

It's just a demo, which makes Trimble the new Nostromo (whatever
happened to that crazy Aussie?)

Which is all nice, but not what essentially makes a "Thief" game for me.
If that what makes a good game for you, then enjoy. Have fun. That's
what its made for. I just hoped for other things, for example none of
that railway-feeling that was there from the first level on.

I'm pretty sure he was Aussie. I can ask him if there's no consensus in
the communal memory. In any case he announced he was leaving back in
October 2010:

Yes 'Demo' of cause.
The 1st 2 Thief games were famous for there Demo Versions.
This 2014 one seems to also have the same basic intro. level.
Worth remembering before cursing & damning it immediately
that that 1st section is very limited--- must follow the dots---
by design to show how the game play works.
Sooo I suggest playing at least into level 2 before cursing the HoRRiD thing
totally.

PLAYABLE Demo ?
If Playable Demo, URL please. Can't find it.

Or just a video/YouTube "demo" ? Totally useless for assessing the
validity of the NPC AI in a sneaking game.

No, but inquiring Trimble about "demos" (quote unquote, get it? wink
wink) is like a married man calling from a whorehouse chastising another
for cheating on his wife.

Giganews is a paid **binary** usenet provider, why would you need such
service for text based newsgroups? I'm not accusing you of anything and
frankly I couldn't care less, just honestly curious.

Because my ISP gave up hosting usenet newsgroups a few years ago. I
pay Giganews a very small sum each month to continue being on these
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games........ "forums".

BTW, if you ever tracked my history over the years, you would know
very well indeed that I have NEVER EVER pirated a video game...

nope, I don't subscribe to a paid usenet service.

But I know all about them, and why people shell out the subscription
fees. So I'm just askin (grin), since you brought up the subject.

Honestly? I don't give a shit about what people say about "piracy" in
newsgroups, no matter how sanctimonious they put their opinions.
Because I don't believe much (or rather, anything) about what people
say about themselves in newsgroups - on on the internet generally.

What fool would?

bwaaaahaaahaaa! Jeez, John, you're making a caricature of yourself

As I said I wasn't accusing you - or Trimble for that matter - of
anything. I've been around these neck of woods for two decades and know
your history very well.

But my question now is - why pay for a service when you can have
something equivalent for free? Again, just curious. Eternal September
(among others and no, Google groups doesn't count) is very reliable and
carries pretty much everything except binary groups.

I autopay $3 per month for my Giganews usenet text feed and it has
proved to be exceptionally reliable. Not worth the hassle of change.

Just now, I tried logging in to 'www.eternal-september.org'. Seems to
be dead

"Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to www.eternal-september.org"

Thanks for the suggestion, but..... "Free" sometimes has its price....
Sadly, life is too short for this sort of nonsense...

Heh, Murphy's (?) Law at play here - I've been with eternal september
since the motzarella days and could count on the fingers of one hand the
number of times their nntp server went down temporarily and yesterday
was one of those times. Never had a need to go to their web site once
my account was created so I can't vouch for it, but it seems to be down
right now indeed.

Didn't know giganews offered text only accounts, this whole enchilada
makes a bit more sense now but I still think it's not worth the extra
cash, however little, all things considered.

And to put you in the most deified company, I wouldn't believe George
Washington if, as the quasi-biblical story says he said "I'd never
tell a lie!" -- re. some bullshit about a cherrry tree.

But I don't even believe the fucking story.

I wonder how John found a text only giganews account? Strange, that
is.

That'd be a shitload of trouble to go through when .... well shit,
giganews limited accounts are described by bandwidth.

Thanks for including me in such celebrated company.

You have every right not to believe me. You don't know me
personally... just as neither you nor I knew George Washington.

However, I have a history in the usenet computer gaming groups that
goes way back into the comp.sys.amiga days You might want to poke in
the old PC and Amiga usenet archives for my opinions on piracy. I have
a large collection of games all legitimately acquired, the largest
proportion being from the "bargain-bin". I mostly play SP games, so a
few months delay before playing does not bother me... and gives time
for a few patches.

yah right, John, and so does Trimble and everyone else. I doubt
anyone posting to csipga or csipgr are newbs.
I don't know why you should imagine that your having a long history of
saying beautific things about yourself, how you've never warezed an
app or game in your life! etc., makes you any more believable than
anyone else who says beautific things about themselves. Like (esp.)
Rin. Esp. when you post snark suggesting that others don't meet your
high moral standard, yoursanctity.

I think shit like that is funny, John.

Er, my request to Trimble was for him to post the URL for the demo he
has been using for his initial analysis of the game. Maybe it was one
of the available non-playable fairly-lengthy in-game demos .Or more
likely he discovered a playable demo of Thief 4 that I failed to turn
up in a Google search... that sort of thing does happen, btw.

Anyway, he has not replied to my request in this thread. Maybe he
missed seeing my posting....

I'm sure, John. And I'm happy now to know, from your own repeated
words going back over a decade as you say, that you've never pirated a
game or app - and that you, even if nobody else is, are pure.

On the other hand, if so then I'm fucking well glad that Trimble
missed seeing your wonderful posting.
