Drakensang RPG Crash on Load

Drakensang crashes on load, something about a rendering error.

Anyone else having this problem?

Is there a fix?

Note checked DTP Tech Support Forum and found little help.

You could try fiddling with the graphics options if you can get that far.

Is this "nD3D9Server: Could not create d3d device" error?

It is the....

nD3D9sHADER: failed to create effect file 'shaders:shape_vs_3_0_ps_0'

....error.

REF: WinXP SP2, nVidia GeForce 7900GS

Note the game is on my J: drive.

And I have "DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)"

probably nVidia driver thing.

Did you install DirectX that came with the game?
(...\Steam\steamapps\common\Drakensang\directX)

You've got to be kidding?! Downgrade a key component?

I don't know about XP (I skipped it as bloated, slow and cumbersome OS, had moved WinME->Win7),
but in Vista and Win7, when you install another version of DirectX, it does not
replace previous installation, it installs along with it.
So you might have installed all versions, revisions if necessary.

Actually not installing Dx that comes with a game is asking for trouble.

Downgrade?

Google say Drakensang was released in Aug 2008, which would have made
the current DX version 9.0c since it came out in Aug 2004.
It might have also come with 10.1 for Vista SP1 since that came out in
Feb 2008.

You're using XP, 9.0c is what that game came with for XP so that's not
the problem.

Unless it's specifically looking for pieces of it in the above mentioned
directory instead of under the windows directory - not sure how
Drakensang references that stuff.
Mind you the steam games I do have all installed that without giving me
a choice, so likely Drakensang did too.

No one seems to check to see what version you're running anymore and
only installing theirs if needed, now they just install.
I suppose it sorta makes sense, since the current installation could be
damaged.

You imply WinXP is "bloated" and went to Win7?! Have you compared the
system requirements for WinXP to Win7?

Win7 is much more of a resource hog than WinXP.

I will not go to Win7, or Win8, because both would require me to
manually reinstall more than 100 apps. Microdunce NOT providing a way
to convert a WinXP system to a Win7 system as an upgrade (which they
did with Win98 to WinXP) shows how much they do NOT care about
customers. Way back, when I converted from Win98 to WinXP the only
thing I had to do (after determining my system was stable) was use a
3rd-party tool that converted FAT to NTFS without losing data. My
WinXP SP3 rig has been very, very stable ever since.

Just in case I tried reinstalling DirectX via the Microsoft source.
It's OK.

The error implies this is a file-creation error, so the question is
just WHERE was this file supposed to be created and by which process?

There is a way you could do it. Get a Windows Vista install disk and use
it to upgrade XP to Vista, then you should be able to upgrade Vista to
Windows 7. You don't need a Vista key and you don't need activate it.
Just install it in "demo" mode without entering a key.

I did similar thing when I upgrade my mom's computer from Windows ME to
Windows Vista.
