Deus Ex Universe and New DX Game Revealed

A post to the Eidos Montreal blog has a post about what they are up to that
includes plans for Deus Ex Universe, an "ongoing, expanding and connected
game world built across a generation of core games" as well as a new Deus Ex
game coming to Windows and consoles. They include a piece of concept art and
this write-up from David Anfossi:

The concept behind Deus Ex: Universe is to create an ongoing, expanding
and connected game world built across a generation of core games. It’s a
commitment on our part to deliver meaningful content that expands the
franchise on a regular basis and to deliver a deep conspiracy that will span
several connected Deus Ex games, creating a more immersive and richer
experience than ever before. Deus Ex: Universe will include PC and console
games, but also additional Deus Ex games and experiences available in other
media such as tablets, smartphones, books, graphic novels, etc... You might
have seen the name pop up recently in the press – well this is what it’s all
about. I’m pleased to confirm that we are already into production of the
starting point for Deus Ex: Universe with a new game for PC and
next-generation consoles. We’re very excited about it at the studio and I
wanted to let you know that most of the team behind Deus Ex: Human
Revolution is already working hard on this new game. It took us four years
to learn how to create a unique Deus Ex experience with Human Revolution and
it was important for me to keep this knowledge within the franchise.

Deus Ex is one of my favorites, but I'm not sure I understand what
"universe" will be, do you?

"Content that expands the franchise"...does that means expansions like
FO3, New Vegas, that sort of thing. This release doesn't seem to me like
it's going to be a totally new game. But, I'm frequently wrong.

It sounds to me like it will be a 'chapter-based' game (series) not unlike
the 'Episodes' for Half-Life: Aftermath or, dare I say it, the Alternate
Reality series. (Remember that one?)

Whether it will succeed depends on the quality of it's 'overall story', so
to speak.

There are as many ways to build (or screw up) a 'Universe' as there are
'elements' to base it on.

(A Sokoban Universe, for example, would probably 'borrow' elements from
Chip's Challenge, S.C.Out, and Midnight Synergy's Wonderland series and a
Tatris Universe would take inspiration from clones like Hacker, Bloxeed,
Zetrix and Nyet III, not just the 'spinoffs' (Tetris Plus, Shockwave, TGM).
Either way, the resulting product would have to be feature rich before I'd
lay down my hard-earned cash for it, especially after what happened to
other 'updates' like the modernized Pipe Dream (CD check=FAIL!=NO SALE!!!))

Let's see how things go, in any event.

Perhaps Siege of Avalon would be a better example since it actually had
6 chapters published.

Well, to me it sounds like something else. Or, to be honest, something
pretty much like everything else ; you can expect mobile games, more
books, a movie, several games and social crap out of Deus Ex. Which is
pretty much what every franchise is doing these days (and what DE is
already doing, in fact).

"We have found an interesting cow to Milk" sums up this announcement
rather well.
